RB JJ Arrington, Arizona Cardinals
In the fantasy football world, JJ Arrington is best known for being a bust of a fantasy draft pick. Coming into the league as a rookie, fantasy owners were under the impression that he would have a big rookie season. While that was off base, Arrington gets some time at running back for the Cardinals and is a threat in the open field.

RB Carey Davis, Pittsburgh Steelers
Most fullbacks aren’t startable in the fantasy football world but with Carey Davis of the Steelers, you can be confident that he’ll at least get a couple touches. In the two games Pittsburgh has played in the playoffs, Davis has five touches. In their last three games, he has seven touches. If you need an emergency starter and all the other RBs are taken, look at Davis.

WR Jerheme Urban, Arizona Cardinals
There’s no doubt that the Cardinals will try a couple trick plays against the Steelers to try to catch Pittsburgh off guard. One target for the trick play could be Urban, who is the fourth wide receiver for the Cardinals. During the regular season, he threw a pass that was complete and he also had two touchdowns in the final three games.

WR Limas Sweed, Pittsburgh Steelers
Against the Ravens, Limas Sweed’s stat line would have looked a lot better if he would have hauled in the long bomb that fell right through his finger tips. If Hines Ward is banged up and Santonio Holmes is double-covered, Sweed could be the difference maker as a long ball threat.

Expect Ryan to have an even better game in Week 9. Right now, he’s a definite fantasy football sleeper for the week.

RB Michael Pittman, Denver Broncos
Michael Pittman is banged up and is currently listed as questionable for the Week 9 game. But he was able to practice late in the week and should start the game and have a heavy workload. Against the Miami Dolphins, Pittman should be able to produce a nice fantasy football line.

WR Joey Galloway, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Chance are Joey Galloway is going to have a breakout game at some point this season. This week against the Kansas City Chiefs is a good bet to be that week. Galloway is as healthy as he’s been since his injury and should be able to get a long touchdown in this week’s game.

TE Donald Lee, Green Bay Packers
The Packers are facing a very tough defense this week when they take on the Tennessee Titans in Week 9. However, if the Packers are going to have any success against the Titans, it will likely be with Lee finding room in the middle of their secondary. That is the one weak spot in the Tennessee defense, as illustrated last week when tight end Dallas Clark had a pair of touchdowns.

Don’t look now but Kyle Orton is one of the hottest quarterbacks in the entire NFL. He started the season off slowly but he’s now put up four consecutive solid fantasy weeks. In Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons, he wasn’t fantastic but he did a good job fantasy wise.
RB Michael Pittman, Denver Broncos
Although the Broncos have mostly used a running back committee for much of the season, it appears as if Pittman may be winning the battle to become the lead back. In Week 6, Pittman got all of the team’s carries and had a very good game. From here on out, Pittman could be a top notch back — as long as he remains the starter.

WR Matt Jones, Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars usually don’t have very good fantasy football wide receivers, however Matt Jones is starting to look like a fantasy sleeper. He has easily been the most productive receiver on the Jaguars and he continues to improve week after week. He only has one touchdown so far this season, but with his size he could easily start become a weekly touchdown threat.

TE Marcedes Lewis, Jacksonville Jaguars
In the last two weeks, Marcedes Lewis has had touchdowns. He won’t get many looks on a weekly basis but Lewis is definitely a touchdown threat. With David Garrard getting more and more comfortable at the quarterback position, that bodes well for all his receiving targets.

Kevin Smith, Detroit Lions
All indications point to Kevin Smith starting for the Lions at running back. Smith doesn’t have much competition — considering that Tatum Bell is his backup. He could be a big factor if he can stay healthy.

Matt Forte, Chicago Bears
Like Smith, Forte is also expected to be the starter. While Forte is arguably the more talented player, his situation doesn’t look as promising. He’s on a team with a bad offense and has more talent behind him at running back, including Kevin Jones and the other Adrian Peterson.

Ray Rice, Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens are starting Willis McGahee at running back. However, many team insiders claim Ray Rice has looked better so far this season. If McGahee struggled, expect Rice to get plenty of time.

Jonathan Stewart, Carolina Panthers
Although he has to share time with DeAngelo Williams, expect Jonathan Stewart to have a solid year. Williams is a finesse back, which should allow Stewart to get goal line carries.

Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh Steelers
Although he was picked in the first round, Mendenhall has his work cut out for him in terms of getting carries this season. Willie Parker is the starter and has a successful history with the Steelers. Mendenhall also had trouble with fumbles in the preseason.

Tim Hightower, Arizona Cardinals
With Edgerrin James likely slowing down in Arizona, Tim Hightower is a player who could be asked to add juice to an otherwise tepid ground game. Expect the Cardinals to give James more rest this season and give Hightower a chance to prove himself.

Here is a highlight reel video of Tim Hightower in action:

A lot more people think fantasy football is won during the season by picking the best players to start each week. While there is some truth to that logic, I believe that fantasy football is won during the summer when you prepare for the upcoming fantasy football season. And truthfully, this is the funnest time of year — before the in-season pressure begins to build up.

What can you do in the summer when you need to scratch that fantasy football itch?

-You can review to see how you did in previous years and find areas you can improve.

-You can talk to fellow fantasy football owners to gain information on what they are thinking heading into the next season.

-You can make cheat sheets for your upcoming fantasy drafts.

-You can start ranking the best players at each position.

-You can make lists of sleepers at each position.

-And most importantly, you can decide exactly what you will do with your fantasy football winnings!

Oh and don’t forget to stay up to date on the latest Favre drama during the summer. It wouldn’t be summertime if Favre wasn’t in the headlines.
