Although Burress was instrumental in the Giants’ Super Bowl victory in 2007, the team decided that the bad now outweighs the good. In 2009 fantasy football drafts, fantasy owners will have to make a similar decision.

Plaxico Burress Released by the Giants (Image: Newscom)

The major trouble for Burress started when he shot himself in the leg back in November. Due to that incident, Burress faces a felony charge that could very well lead to prison time. Even if he’s not sent to prison, he could face a suspension from the NFL.

His value in fantasy football will depend on which team he lands with and how much action he will miss. Even though he has had a lot of personal problems over the years, Burress is a very good fantasy player. In 2006 and 2007 combined, Burress had 22 touchdowns and more than 2000 yards receiving. That type of production makes him viable in the fantasy world any time he steps onto the field.

As for the Giants, they actually have a lot of wide receiver talent and they should be able to pick up most of the slack. Domenik Hixon, Mario Manningham, Sinorice Moss and Steve Smith are all very capable of stepping into larger roles. That said, quarterback Eli Manning’s stock is lowered due to this news because Burress was his favorite option and it will be harder now for Manning to accumulate touchdown passes.

Even before the start of the NFL offseason, there are still some rumblings about possible offseason transactions. One such transaction that is now a rumor is Anquan Boldin of the Arizona Cardinals ending up with the New York Giants.

Even though Boldin and the Cardinals are about to play in the Super Bowl, Boldin hasn’t been a happy camper as of late. After the Cardinals advanced to the Super Bowl, instead of celebrating with his teammates, Boldin slipped out the back door because he was angry about not playing enough. Throughout the season, Boldin has expressed displeasure regarding his current contract.

Why would the Giants be interested? Two words: Plaxico Burress. In the season after winning the Super Bowl, Burress was a Super Distraction. When he wasn’t getting suspended for missing meetings, he was literally shooting himself in the leg. Although the Giants haven’t made any firm decision regarding his future, there is a lot of talk around New York that the Giants will cut ties with Burress.

If the Giants were to replace Burress with Boldin, it would definitely shake things up. While both players are very good wide receivers, Boldin is more of a possession receiver while Burress is more of a big play receiver. In the same offense, Boldin would likely get more reception and more yards, while Burress would get more touchdowns.

For Eli Manning, his fantasy value may rise if the Giants replace Burress with Boldin. Boldin is more consistent and would give Manning a dependable receiving option in each game.

With Burress out of action, the Giants will have to look elsewhere for production at wide receiver. The good news in that New York is packed with a ton of solid wideout options. Amani Toomer, Sinorice Moss, Steve Smith, Mario Manningham and Domenik Hixon all are available for the Giants to help replace Burress during the game he’s suspended.

Toomer is the obvious choice for the player who will see a rise in targets. However, Smith is a good bet to catch a solid amount of passes with Burress out. In fact, Smith caught seven passes in Week 3 with Burress out.

If you want to take a flier on a sleeper, go with Domenik Hixon. In the preseason, Hixon was dominant at times and he could be the best equipped to replace Burress’ ability to beat defenses vertically.

Eli Manning will miss Burress but luckily for him he’ll have plenty of other options to pick from when he drops back to pass.

RB Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings
In Week 1, Matt Forte had a very good day running the ball against the Colts. This week, Adrian Peterson should have success against Indianapolis. He should get plenty of carries this week and will likely finish with more than 120 yards rushing and at least one touchdown.

WR Plaxico Burress, New York Giants
The Giants get to go up against the St. Louis Rams in Week 2. This is the same team that got destroyed by the Eagles in Week 1. Expect Burress to have a huge game — with a long touchdown pass being very likely.

TE Jason Witten, Dallas Cowboys
The Eagles will likely spend the week trying to slow down Terrell Owens, which should open up things for Jason Witten to be dominant. Witten is quickly separating himself as the clear cut best fantasy tight end in all the land.

If you have Jason Witten on your fantasy football team, be excited.

Which fantasy football players stood out in the first game of the NFL season? Although the Giants won the game 16-7, both teams had some notable fantasy football performance.

Plaxico Burress, New York Giants
Many worried about Plaxico Burress and his leg injuries heading into the 2008 season. However, in the first game of the season, Burress proved he’s feeling good. He finished the game with 10 catches for 133 yards.

Brandon Jacobs, New York Giants
Getting a bit over two-thirds of the carries for the Giants, Brandon Jacobs looked really good. He was powerful and showed very good burst. If he stays healthy, he could have a big year. Jacobs finished the game with 21 carries for 116 yards.

Eli Manning, New York Giants
Although he started off on fire, Eli Manning really cooled down as the game went along. Although he was passing the ball well to Burress, the rest of his passes looked a bit off. Manning didn’t have a passing touchdown but he was able to score a rushing touchdown.

Clinton Portis, Washington Redskins
Although he didn’t have a hugely productive game, Portis was very involved for the Redskins. If you have Portis on your team, you know that he will get a lot of touches each and every game. Portis finished the game with 84 rushing yards.

Antwaan Randle El, Washington Redskins
Antwaan Randle El didn’t have much fantasy football love heading into the season but his performance in the first game may turn a few heads. Playing in a new offense, Randle El had seven catches for 73 yards. If he keeps it up, he could become a fantasy option soon.

1. Randy Moss – The Brady to Moss connection will be seen plenty.
2. Terrell Owens – Owens is only other WR in Moss’ class.
3. Reggie Wayne – With Harrison aging, it’s time for Wayne to bring pain.
4. Andre Johnson – When healthy, as good as anyone.
5. Braylon Edwards – High risk, high reward in 2008 fantasy football.
6. Marques Colston – Has the makings of a very good career.
7. Larry Fitzgerald – Fitzgerald has as much natural talent as anyone.
8. TJ Houshmandzadeh – Always seems to be underrated.

Steve Smith, Carolina Panthers
While the major news regarding Steve Smith is his two-game suspension for punching a teammate, Smith now has some injury woes to deal with. Smith suffered a concussion in a preseason game that could sideline him for a bit. The good news is that he should be ready for when his suspension is lifted by the Panthers.

Braylon Edwards, Cleveland Browns
Braylon Edwards was involved in a freak injury during a Browns practice. Running in socks, Edwards was racing against newly acquired wide receiver Donte Stallworth. After the race, Edwards slowed down and Stallworth stepped on the back of his foot with spiked cleats. The accident forced Edwards to the hospital. However, he should be ready to go in plenty of time before the regular season.

Anquan Boldin, Arizona Cardinals
For the last few weeks, Anquan Boldin has struggled with a hamstring injury. The good news is that the Cardinals wide receiver is now ready to return to practice. He is also saying that he will play in Arizona’s next preseason game. That said, keep an eye on Boldin because hamstring injuries can linger for an entire season.

Plaxico Burress, New York Giants
The same ankle that bothered Plaxico Burress last season is bothering him again. He is sitting out practices and will likely be very questionable to play in any preseason game. Burress and the Giants want him as healthy as possible heading into the regular season.
