QB Mark Sanchez, New York Jets
Mark Sanchez is getting tons of press and is the darling of New York football at the moment. However, he doesn’t have very much value in fantasy football. Sell him high to get value out of him before the rest of the fantasy world catches on.

RB Willis McGahee, Baltimore Ravens
Early this season, Willis McGahee has been a touchdown machine. While he’s talented, it’s unlikely that he’ll keep up this pace — or stay healthy for the duration of the campaign. Go ahead and trade him now to maximize his value.

WR Mario Manningham, New York Giants
In Week 2, Mario Manningham was fantastic. But since then, he’s been average. With the Giants getting a number of wide receivers healthy once again, Manningham should see less and less action. Trade him now before the bottom falls out.

TE Todd Heap, Baltimore Ravens
Even though Todd Heap is off to a very strong start, it’s difficult to believe that he’ll keep up his current pace. He wasn’t very good in the last two seasons and has a history of injury. If a team is desperate of a tight end and Heap is your backup, make a trade happen to sell high.

RB Cadillac Williams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I can’t imagine Cadillac Williams holding up for the entire 2009 fantasy football season. While he’s healthy, see what you can get on the trade market.

WR Nate Burleson, Seattle Seahawks
In Week 1, Nate Burleson was a big part of the Seahawks offense. But as the season goes along, you have to think that TJ Houshmandzadeh will take a bigger slice of that pie.

TE Ben Watson, New England Patriots
Sure, his two touchdowns were very impressive. But he doesn’t even start at tight end for the Patriots and he’s likely to once again become invisible in the fantasy world.

Frank Francisco, Texas Rangers
Just like Bell, Frank Francisco is a closer who is pitching great for an overachieving team. He hasn’t given up a run and the Rangers are near the top of the American League. Francisco’s value will only go down from here.

Edwin Jackson, Detroit Tigers
While with the Tampa Bay Rays, Edwin Jackson showed instances of potential. But it’s highly doubtful that his 2.55 ERA and 1.10 WHIP are here to stay. Trading Jackson would make a lot of sense right now.

Zach Duke, Pittsburgh Pirates
Zach Duke is having a great season for the Pirates. He has a 2.77 ERA and a WHIP of 1.08. But considering that his best marks over the last three years were a 4.47 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP, it’s difficult to imagine him keeping up his current pace.

David Aardsma, Seattle Mariners
Right now, David Aardsma has a lot of value. He’s the closer for the Mariners and he’s sporting a 1.25 ERA. But this is the same reliever who has been with five different teams over his last five seasons. If he was this special, wouldn’t someone have held on to him? Sell.

QB Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys - Romo has been a very good fantasy quarterback this season. He’s no doubt top five at position. That said, it may be time to start to look at trading him. If you look at his numbers, he has had three average weeks in a row. Against the Vikings in Week 7, he didn’t have the fantasy production many expected against Minnesota’s weak pass defense. If you can trade Romo to an owner who hasn’t realized that Romo has cooled off, you could get more in return than he is actually worth.

RB Joseph Addai - This is a risky sell high because Addai has been very good and should continue to be a top running back in fantasy football. However, this past week has to worry Addai owners. For the first time this season, Addai was in an obvious running back by committee with his backup Kenton Keith. If Keith keep stealing carries away from Addai, that’ll drastically lower Addai’s value. By trading him now, you may be able to find an owner who isn’t aware of Addai’s current situation.

WR Steve Smith – Coming off his bye week, Smith last played in Week 6 and had 151 total yards and a touchdown. However, reports out of Carolina indicate that David Carr could be back in charge of the Panthers’ offense this week. If that’s the case, that’s actually bad news for Smith. Carr and Smith don’t seem to have much of a chemistry, which could end up rapidly lowering Smith’s value. By trading him now, you can get very good value from Smith without having to depend on Carr figuring out how to get him the football.

It’s difficult to do because you have to trade away good players and be willing to receive underperforming players in return. But as long as you are confident in your ability to assess players, it’s a very good strategy to live by.

Here are a couple players who currently fall into the buy low, sell high category.

Ronnie Brown, Miami Dolphins
Sell High
Brown is off to a great start. He’s one of the most valuable running backs in fantasy football. That said, now is a good time to get value for him. His stats have been inflated to date due to playing easy teams. He’s really racked up most of his fantasy points in the last three weeks when he matched up against the Jets, Raiders and Texans. Those three teams aren’t exactly defensive juggernauts. Additionally, if you want to make championship push, you should notice that Brown plays the Ravens and Patriots in the 15th and 16th weeks of the season. That’s even more reason to trade him now while is value is sky high.

Steve Smith, Carolina Panthers
Sell High
With Jake Delhomme out for the season, that’s a devastating blow to Smith. Smith relies on Delhomme to truly be a fantasy stud. Without Delhomme, Smith becomes human. He’s still a very good fantasy player, but no longer is he a top three wide receiver in fantasy football. Now is a good time to trade him before other owners in your league catch on to exactly how much Smith relied on Delhomme. Trading him for another stud wide receiver with a better quarterback (for example, TJ Housh) makes a lot of sense. But do it quickly before Smith’s stock starts to dip.

Andre Johnson, Houston Texans
Buy Low
Johnson was a great fantasy wide receiver in the first two weeks of the fantasy season. He got hurt in the second week and it’s unknown when his return to action will take place. However, that uncertainty can play into your hands as a fantasy owner. If you can trade for him now while his status is still up in the air, that could be a transaction that pays huge dividends down the line when Johnson is healthy.

Frank Gore, San Francisco 49ers
Buy Low
Gore has had a poor last three weeks. He hasn’t done much of anything and has hardly been worth starting. That said, he’s a guy you want to try to get on your team. The last three weeks, the Niners have taken on the Steelers, Seahawks and Ravens – three very formidable defenses. On top of that, San Fransico’s whole offensive unit is out of sorts because of Trent Dilfer taking over for due to injury. After his bye week this week, Gore’s schedule eases up and his quarterback situation should start to clear up soon as well.

One player that’s like that currently is Brett Favre. At 4-0, the Green Bay Packers have surpassed everybody’s expectations so far this young season. That said, it’s likely time to trade Favre if you have him on your roster and you are hurting at other positions.

Favre is off to a tremendous start. However over the past few seasons, Favre has proved to be only adequate back-up fantasy quarterback, and definitely not a top-notch starter. There is no reason to believe he is not going to come back to earth sometimes really soon. Therefore if you can prey on a quarterback-hungry team and trade him now, you should definitely consider it.

Of course, it could blow up in your face if Favre somehow keeps it up all year. But I seriously doubt it.

Check out b5’s David Kindervarten’s interview with Favre from a couple weeks back at Every Morning Quarterback.
