If you’ve seen video of Usain Bolt, you know the amazing speed the man possesses. In the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Bolt has been extremely impressive. Not only did he win a gold medal in both the 100 meters and 200 meters sprint events, he broke the world record in both events.
Bolt is unique in that he’s 6-foot-5 — a size that was previously thought to be too tall for a sprinter. Not only has Bolt destroyed his competition, he has also destroyed that stereotype.
If you are a fantasy football owner, you probably have the same idea as me. Could Usain Bolt play in the NFL? And if he did play in the NFL, what would Bolts’ fantasy football projections be as he adjusts to the new sport?
While there hasn’t been any word from Bolt about playing in the NFL, it is a question that is sure to be asked a lot in the coming months. At 6-foot-5, Bolt has the size to be a big play NFL wide receiver. He no doubt has the speed and when you combine his speed with his height, a faster version of Randy Moss immediately comes to mind.
However, Bolt would have to prove too things to NFL scouts before he is given a contract. First of all, he has to show that he’s capable of taking a hit. It is a big difference going from running untouched to running with huge defensive players looming. Secondly, Bolt will have to show he can catch the ball. Being tall and unbelievably fast won’t do much good if he can’t catch the passes coming his way.
While this scenario sounds outlandish, Bolt wouldn’t be the first sprinter to make it in the NFL. Other sprinters turned NFL players include Willie Gault, Bob Hayes, James Jett and Renaldo Nehemiah. Bolt would definitely be the highest profile sprinter to make it in the NFL and if he even starts to think about it, you can bet on every NFL team considering the amazing possibilities.
Don’t expect to see Bolt on an NFL field in the coming months or years, however you also shouldn’t be surprised if it does transpire.
