Apparently, many employers were not prepared to lay off workers during the holidays. Whether the spirit of giving prevailed, or whether many companies just needed the extra seasonal help, the fact remains that the latest ADP payrolls data, just released, shows that job loss is slowing. While the unemployment rate remains high, the pace of job losses has been slowing, and there are hopes that things could turn around solidly, with the economy adding jobs overall, by the end of 2010.

The U.S. services sector is also enhancing, and this is providing a great deal of hope, especially when added to the employment data. There are signs that 2010 could mean economic recovery.

However, it is important to remember that economic recovery is still likely to be slow in coming. Even though job losses are slowing, job creation is quite sluggish. And the housing market remains somewhat stagnant as of late. All of this points to the possibility of a double dip recession. Indeed, there has been some difference of opinion with regard to what is to be expected from the economy going forward. It should be an interesting year, either bringing a movement toward economic recovery, or slippage back into recession.

Tiger Woods hasn’t just been a great golfer, he’s been an intimidating presence. It’s been quite common for golfers to melt when brought too near Tiger’s heat. However, at least one golfer thinks that Tiger’s aura may not be as strong when Tiger eventually returns: Colin Montgomerie.

“It is absolutely impossible to play good golf,” said Montgomerie during an interview with Sky Sports when asked if Tiger can play good golf with all of his unsettled personal issues.

Continued Montgomerie: “There is no question there was an aura about Tiger Woods over this incredible record he has, not just in majors but in other world events. That wall has been split slightly and there are cracks.”

While most golfers haven’t talked extensively to the media about Tiger’s troubles, Montgomerie isn’t exactly known to backing down from a mic. The 46-year-old native of Scotland doesn’t have a very good relationship with the American public, which may give him a unique look into what Tiger could face in coming years.

Said Montgomerie: “A round of golf is an emotional roller-coaster anyway. I think it must have been similar for him: When you hit a shot and it goes left or right into the woods, immediately thoughts creep in during the long, two to three-minute walk to find the ball.”

But if Chuck goes, he’s gone: Casey has orders to off him… [he] survives to unravel mysteries of the past, become a hero in the present, and – in a stunner of a season finale – chop-and-drop himself into an even more perilous future!”

I had to rely on that description because I haven’t seen the show and I couldn’t really understand what I’ve read about it. I guess I should give it a shot since it seems to be popular enough and it certainly sounds complex (which I like).

The two-hour season three premiere of Chuck airs on Sunday, January 10, 2010.

In 38 minutes, Bynum had 24 points, eight rebounds and two steals, while hitting 10-of-16 field goal attempts.

The Rockets, who were defeated by the Lakers last year in the second round of the playoffs, were led by Carl Landry’s 19 points off the bench. Aaron Brooks chipped in with 18 points, while former Lakers swingman Trevor Ariza had only 12 points on 5-for-14 shooting.

With the win, the Lakers improved to 28-6 and have complete control of the Western Conference standings. The Rockets, now 20-15, are currently the seventh seed.

Always a guy who kept to himself, history is going to be very kind to Johnson. The lefty will be remembered as one of the most feared pitchers in history. He also won a World Series with the Arizona Diamondbacks and will soon find himself in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Johnson’s best season was probably in 2001 with the World Series winning Diamondbacks. He went 21-6 with a 2.49 ERA and a career-high 372 strikeouts. In the playoffs that year he was 5-1 with a 1.52 ERA. He also won one of his four Cy Young Awards and was named World Series MVP.

“I never thought I was going to play this long. I’m blessed that I did,” said the 46-year-old.

I was recently chatting with someone and we got to talking about different audio players and MP3 devices. Both of us commented on how much we used our players for listening to podcasts and audio books. There’s something seriously missing from the mainstream players we discussed.

When you’re listening to a long podcast or an audiobook, there are times when something is mentioned that you’d like to make a mental note of and come back to it later. The problem with mental notes is we forget them before we can write them down.

If audio players had the functionality of an audio highlighting tool, you could quickly tag a position in the playback and come back to it later for review. The simple execution would be to be able to press a button on the device to bookmark and highlight an area. The more useful feature might be a voice-enabled option that would let you say something like “highlight 30 seconds”. The device would then mark a 30 second block at that point.

Later when you’re able, you can then return to this highlighted portions and make notes. When the device is connected to the management software, being able to see a list of your bookmarks and then add your own notes to those tags, that would be super useful don’t you think?

By now, you’ve probably been reading about the move by many stations to begin broadcasting in 3D. With the popularity of Avatar and other 3D films in the past few years, I’m really not surprised. One of the networks on the list is ESPN, who will launch ESPN 3D in June of this year.

Whether or not 3D television will be a success is anybody’s guess. Personally, I’m still getting used to HD and DVRs. But, regardless of how well it does in the long run, there will be at least 85 sporting events broadcast in 3D over the next year, starting with the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match. One of the games on the schedule is the 2011 BCS National Championship game.

Don’t worry – they’ve been testing this technology on live events already, so the unveiling isn’t going to be a total disaster. In fact, some college football fans already had a sneak peak, as ESPN broadcast the USC-Ohio State game on USC’s campus for around 6,000 fans.

If all goes well, I suspect we’ll see more and more events broadcast in 3D, though I doubt we’ll start seeing all games in an extra dimension. They’ll start with the most popular games, like the other BCS bowls and high-profile games, like the annual SEC Championship. Football is a great medium to show off the technology, but the fact of the matter is this: with so many Div-I teams and no kind of playoff system, there are tons of games that aren’t watched, even by people who love football (and that’s not including all of the games that aren’t shown on TV at all). So, if this kind of technology really starts to expand, I think we’ll be seeing it more and more in other sports and with NFL games. For now.
