Bad News for Flyers: Timonen Out With Blood Clot

NHL ALL-STAR WEEKEND The Philadelphia Flyers have gotten some bad news:  their all-star defenseman Kimmo Timonen has been sidelined indefinitely with a blood clot in his left foot.  The Flyers meet the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Timonen was injured when he was hit with a shot by Montreal Canadiens player, Andrei Markov, late in Game 4 of the Flyers’ second round series against the Habs. He played through the pain in Game 5, but felt numbness in the foot throughout this week.  A vascular surgeon confirmed the presence of a small blood clot.  To treat the condition, Timonen will have to take blood thinners which would make playing in the Conference Finals really dangerous.  The only way he could return to play would be if a test at the end of next week shows that the treatment is working quicker than expected.

Of course, this is not the news Timonen wanted to hear:  “It’s a huge disappointment, obviously,” said Timonen.  “I wasn’t expecting this result. It’s the most disappointing thing in my life, hockey wise.”

The most important thing is for him to get well so I hope he rests for as long as it takes.

A blood clot is nothing to fool around with, so I wish him well, but I hope the Flyers loss tonight wasn’t due to missing their team mate. They need to get it together for a big win on Sunday.
