The Vancouver Canucks hosted the Chicago Blackhawks for Game 1 of the second round last night and, while it wasn’t exactly a runaway, the Canucks drew first blood and skated away with a 5-3 victory.

Pavol Demitra opened scoring on a power-play in the first period which was followed by two more goals for Vancouver in the second period by Henrik Sedin and Ryan Kesler.
They went into the third with a 3-0 lead but lost the edge after Patrick Kane scored twice and then Dave Bolland scored once for the Blackhawks to tie the game. With 1:13 left in the game, Sami Salo scored the tie-breaking, regaining the lead for the Canucks and the deal was sealed by an empty-netter from Ryan Johnson.
Here are some fun facts about the series:
- Patrick Kane was just seven months old when Mats Sundin was drafted first overall in 1989.
- The teams have battled twice before in the playoffs.
- No player on the Canucks has ever won a Stanley Cup but Nikolai Khabibulin (in 2004 with the Tampa Bay Lightning) and Samuel Pahlsson (in 2007 with the Anaheim Ducks) have both won championship rings.
