I Officially Hate San Jose Shark Jody Shelley

Let me just vent for a second about Jody Shelley. I’m not even going to sink so low as to talk about that name but, seriously, did the man’s parents hate him *that* much that his first AND last names are both traditionally female? Maybe that’s why he has to be the rat b*stard that he is.
Last night, when the San Jose Sharks visited the Calgary Flames, he pushed Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff as he tailed Jim Vandermeer near the net. I could have almost ignored it as accidental (even though it was pretty rough) but he proved that he is just a jerk.
He and Vandermeer went off to the side and got into a little scuffle, which was quickly broken up. As he skated off, he saw that Kipper had his back turned to him and he took his stick and rapped the goalie in the back of the knee with it. WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ABOUT??? All he got was a two-minute penalty for roughing. How is that not, at the VERY least, unsportsmanlike conduct?
I’m sorry but, I don’t care what team it is, you don’t mess with the goaltender. When players start doing that I start thinking of them as cowards. Beat the goalie fair and square but most teams only have one great netminder and when you start messing with that, I consider you a bottom feeder.
Jody Shelley, you are officially on my hate list. That was disgusting.
*disclaimer* – I was really upset when I wrote this and I’m not changing it because it was how I felt and I still don’t like Jody Shelley for a million reasons (because sometimes you just hate people). Just remember that sometimes, after a particularly rough game, you can get pretty outraged and that’s why it’s staying – because it’s an example of how frustrated fans can feel. YES, I’m aware that the Flames have done bad things during this series. Look around the site a bit before you accuse me of favoritism.

Your dumb. Obviously you are one of those chicks who doesnt understand that it is hockey. Thats right, HOCKEY! Being a player myself, I understand that in the heat of the moment things can get rough Just because Shelley is rough on the ice doesn’t mean he is a bad guy. He plays the sport and he plays it well. You can’t judge a guy for being passionate about hockey and understanding that you got to do what it takes to win. I LOVE Shelley
I’m glad to get your comment and feedback but find it unfortunate that a) you chose to call me “dumb” and b) you chose to say “your dumb” instead of “you’re dumb.”
Jody Shelley being passionate, pushing and making legal hits is fine. Hitting a goalie in the back of the knee while his back is turned is cowardly and wrong.
Thanks for passing judgment on me without knowing a thing about me. I won’t return the favor since I would like to treat you with respect.
I love hockey and I love my favorite players. I also have the strength to admit when they are wrong. I think it’s the sign of a good fan.
Alright, well since your argument is so weak that you have to result to pointing out typing errors, let me remind you, Jeanne, Kimberly is indeed correct. If you had ever spent so much as one game on the hockey rink, you would know that behavior like that is entirely common. Go spend some time out on the rink instead of your couch and maybe your IQ will raise to the number on Shelley’s jersey. =) Oh yes, I almost forgot, I’ll make sure to think of you when the Sharks win the series on Sunday. Cheers.
Jeanne, YOU’RE (hope i got that right) right, i don’t know you. But you are wrong because I wasnt passing judgement on you, I was stating the fact. Have you ever talked with Jody Shelley? Do you know anything about him other than the fact that he is a kick ass hockey player? I would have to say that you are the judgemental one here, using such strong words as HATE when you know nothi9ng about the player. I just find it a bit silly. I didn’t mean to make you but hurt, I was just trying to get your attention and stick up for Shelley. I appologize for any hard feelings and f course my spelling errors. Now, if you want to talk abou Jody Shelley, and give me some further knowledge as to why he is such a hateable person, then try me. However, i think you may notice that if you pick apart all the hits Shelley make then you would have to pick apart all the hits all the players make. Bottom line, you will find out that most players play the sport rough. Do you think a sport that allows checking is going to help calm the players down? Most likely not but that is what makes the sport so great because the players learn to give their all for what they love. I appreciate your opinion but I dissagree with you. Think about it…and maybe have some kind of argument
P.S. Carli- you couldn’t have said it any better
Crap, I better quickly make some adjustments for spelling errors.

My BAD!
I’m sorry but, anyone who whacks a goalie, hits a goalie, and starts a unnecessary fight is someone I hate.
sorry, whacks a goalie from behind him
By the way, Jeanne, it would be helpful to insert a link to a video of the coincidence you’re referring to.
Not only would it help people reading the article understand what we’re debating, but I would love to watch it again so I can laugh my ass off. Shelley, you rock!
and Kimberly, your rude.
Kimberly – Are you kidding? How can you possibly defend Shelley after what was clearly an *illegal* hook to Kiprusoff. I could understand it if Shelley pushed the goalie slightly out of fustraion, but then to go back for more and hook him is just unacceptable.
You say to Jeanne “Your dumb. Obviously you are one of those chicks who doesnt understand that it is hockey.” However, you seem to be “one of those chicks” who doesnt seem to be able to grasp the concept that it’s not okay for someone to make an illegal move on the goalie – twice. I understand that it’s hard to accept when a player you like does something that is unfavorable, but to call somone dumb is simply rude and disrespectful. To be honest, it is quite immature.
Really, have you seen the footage? Since, as you say, you are a hockey player, I find it hard to believe that you would not be angry had someone hooked and pushed your goalie.
For the future, it is judgemental to call somone, whom you have never met, dumb.
Wow. Some people are just horrible.
I DON’T LIKE JODY SHELLEY. I guess you love every player on the ice.
I’m not going to defend myself on attacks that say ridiculous stuff about whether I have actually watched hockey.
The Hockey News said:
“Sharks winger Jody Shelley dug his stick into the back of Kiprusoff’s right leg while the Flames goalie was heading to the bench after a whistle late in the first. Kiprusoff dropped to his knees, but was unhurt. Shelley was penalized for roughing.”
Yeah, digging your stick into the back of someone’s knee after the whistle blew is beautiful. It wasn’t even part of a play.
http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/15280-Thorntons-late-winner-lifts-Sharks-to-32-victory-over-Flames.html
Exactly. How coardly is it to do that to the goalie. Arguably, the most used and important player on the team.
true
Post all the fallacies you want. Oh, and good luck improving to 45, but for know it looks like you’re backtracking.
Oh yeah, Joshy and Lauren, I suggest you go cry about it. That might make you feel a little better.
You might have missed the part where your player gave a FLYING ELBOW TO THE FACE OF THE SHARKS’ CAPTAIN.
And you’re surprised there was retaliation? Shelley should have blindside assaulted Iginla to even the score. I’m not even joking. Kipper got off lightly.
Hey guys! Lets all calm down a bit. I am a Flames fan and I watched this game very closely. I am proud though to say that I agree with General Disarray, Kim, and Carli. Final, Disarray brings a valid example of how the Flames play just as rough. It goes both ways people. You all have to realize that the sources you are finding your news is most likely biased towards your favord team. The only way you can truly find out if what Shelley did was all that bad is to watch it yourself. Calagry fans read the articles that say “Sharks winger Jody Shelley dug his stick into the back of Kiprusoff’s right leg while the Flames goalie was heading to the bench after a whistle late in the first. Kiprusoff dropped to his knees, but was unhurt. Shelley was penalized for roughing.” If you all look closely, it was just a little tap and Kiprusoff only dropped to one knee. It was barely a fall at all. No harm was done. What is illegal about tapping someone lightly from behind? Did you all watch the game last night? If you did then you would have seen when the period was over and a bunch of players got into a scuffle. Should all of thos players have gotten a penalty? I think you would say no. Yes, maybe Shelley was a little cheap by tapping Kiprusoff from behind, but it happens all the time from everyone. Game 4 was a rough game for us and our players were all over the place at the begining. I encourage everyone of you to go watch the game with an unbiased view and really see what was and wasnt fair. If we are going to pick on one of the Sharks dont you think it is fair that we pick on our own players as well? Love hockey for the sport and appreciate the effort everyone puts into it. Yea, its great to support one team but when you pick on the other team you have to realize that they could do the same to your team. Its Karma, just like how one Flame hits a shark and one shark hits a Flame.
Just a question….who here actually plays hockey? I think that playing the sport yourself helps give you an understanding of the mindset you have out on the ice when you got to win. These teams aren’t going for just anything, its the stanely cup! Congrats one all 16 for making it this far and being true hockey fans themselves!
GEEZUS – Can I hate a player if I want to?
I can also start taking a survey of the readers who play hockey because if they don’t play, they aren’t allowed to hate people.
And, I don’t think I ever said the Flames were perfect. In fact, I think I said that I’m totally willing to admit when they are wrong.
We didn’t deserve to win last night’s game and the Flames were ridiculous to the Sharks in Game 2.
I’m just not willing to start personally attacking readers. I’m not sure how you feel it’s justifiable to be like that because of someone’s *opinion.*
AND, I think I made it clear that I was hypersensitive about it being the goalie. I just don’t think it’s right. Take it out on Vandermeer but I think goalies should be left alone.
I guess everyone who thinks I’m favoring the Flames missed this:

I guess all the praise for the Sharks in this post was “dumb” too -right?
http://www.hockeybeat.com/calgary-flames-at-san-jose-sharks-stanley-cups-playoff-game-1
How about when I talked about Todd Bertuzzi and how I understood what happened with him because, in the heat of a game, stuff can happen?
http://www.hockeybeat.com/moore-rebuked-bertuzzis-settlement-offer
I don’t like Jody Shelley. Period. It’s all about Jody Shelley. I hate other people too. That’s life. Some people rub you the wrong way.
Do I need to endure more raking over the coals for disliking someone and voicing my opinion?
AND, FYI, I did play hockey before being diagnosed with a heart disease, my husband played hockey, my brother is a minor league player in Quebec, my son is a young and growing goalie and I have lived in two hockey cities and have been a fan my whole life.
Alright, alright, we get it. Look, slinging personal insults is a surefire way to lose your argument before you start, so don’t even dignify those comments.
But hey, if you post on the internet that you HATE a player, you might be in for some backlash. Especially when that player is a fan favorite known for sticking up for his teammates. Especially when the opposing team has been just as chippy and just as cheap.
You’re entitled to hate any player you want and post that on the internet. But you’re also entitling everyone on the net to smack down your opinion, and chances are, they won’t be too polite about it. Ah, the perils of free speech.
Fair enough, General Disarray
I see your point since you have made it so clearly and I hope you know that I was just mad, mad, MAD when I wrote it. Just like I was when I wrote how gross the Flames were to the Sharks in Game 2.
I like your blog, by the way. Keep updating, I’m going to be checking it out (I hate favoritism in CBC commentating too).
I think all these people are defending Shelley are just saying that his hit to Kiprusoff did no harm. It was such a baby hit and obviously Shelley didn’t wantto hurt him, he just wanted to get peole a little upumped up about it. Who knows, maybe that made Kiprusoff work extra hard that game? Haven’t you ever seen a goalie push and shove? Listen, you are obviously passionate about hockey and understand it but what dd yo expect when you posted something about “hate”. Its a strong word and i think you are getting the responses you asked for. You can hate whoever you want but maybe your form of hate is a little naive. Maybe there is more reasoning as to why you “hate” but we dont know. Hate who you want and remember to teach your kid to hate them as well because we all know that to hate someone gives people good tempers as well.
Thanks Jeanne, and thanks for the comment over at the Chum Bucket, I’ve RSS’d your site.
Mike – I put a disclaimer explaining this. It’s the playoffs and people are emotional.
In my post, I did say that he “rapped” Kipper and I guess it spiraled from there.
If you look at the site, I’m usually even-tempered and VERY fair so I know I am getting what I asked for with using a word like “hate” but I also overestimated that some of you are new to the site and don’t know that I’m not normally so filled with “hate.” It just took me off guard.
I hope there aren’t hard feelings but I do think there’s a difference between “hating” and critiquing a player versus attacking a person/reader/writer. That was my point.
Will be more careful but I’m not changing my opinion, lol.
You Suck!!
I know this is a late comment, but just out of curiousity, what do you know about Jody off the rink?
I’m a Jackets fan (I’m sure you’re gonna throw that in my face). Regardless, I grew up watching Jody, met him a few times, and read in the paper about all the stuff he’s done in the community.
What you don’t realize (not an attack. I just doubt anyone does, outside of Columbus) is that Jody is actually a really gentle, easygoing guy. He’s one of the most approachable players out there, and he’s done so much work with the Hats for Heroes pediatric cancer program. He was the best damn community guy we had.
And he’s not cheap. I should know, I saw him play damn near every night for five-plus years. A tap does not equal a cheap shot. And you’re denouncing him like he’s Chris Pronger or Bertuzzi or Chris Simon or something. Geez.
Do some research, please, before you start trashing him. Regardless of your disclaimer, that’s no excuse for ignorance.
