Maple Leafs Are Actually Giving Away Tickets

The Toronto Maple Leafs have added a pre-season game to their schedule on September 22, 2008 against the Buffalo Sabres and they are giving away all of the tickets for free. Management is hoping for a different kind of crowd: “Getting more young kids in the building always adds to the excitement (and) just makes it noisier,” said Tom Anselmi, MLSE’s executive vice-president and chief operating officer. “That’s what kids are about. I think this one we’re probably going to hear the noise metre go off the scale because there’s going to be a lot of kids (and) a lot of families.”
So, the story is that most of the seats at the Air Canada Centre belong to season ticket holders and the average fan has a hard time getting a ticket. This free “game” is their way of letting people see the Leafs play (wow, did I just say that the Leafs “play?” Sorry…). Since their season ticket holders are mostly corporate, they don’t make a lot of noise and, well, the games are boring as hell.
Anyway, some of the tickets were given away at a fan appreciation rally, more are being distributed through contests and giveaways but some were actually handed out by the players themselves. It’s a nice gesture but can you say desperate?
