Mark Bell, now of the Toronto Maple Leafs, has been reinstated to “active status.”
The move was made by doctors operating in the league’s Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health program, who monitored Bell in conjunction with his arrest for a drunken-driving incident in September, 2006 and the 15-game suspension levied by the NHL last month.
Now that Bell has been reinstated, he can begin serving the 15-game ban handed down by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
Toronto opens its 2007-2008 regular season Wednesday at Air Canada Centre against the Ottawa Senators. Bell will not be eligible to play until the Leafs’ 16th game, a November 6 contest at Ottawa.
