My Biggest Surprises of the 2008 Stanley Cup Semifinals

The biggest shockers were in the quarterfinals for me (still can’t get over the Ottawa Senators going down like that) but I still found a few things surprising.

I thought, for sure, that the Montreal Canadiens were going to find a way around the Philadelphia Flyers but, alas, they went down in Game 5 in truly heartbreaking fashion – they lost 6-4.  Even worse for us Canucks, is the fact that the elimination of the Habs makes this an all-US Stanley Cup Final.  No more Hockey Night in Canada for me this year :(   I was sad for the Canadiens and felt even worse for Price since he leaves the playoffs after a game during which he was scored on six times.  Ouch.

My second surprise was that the San Jose Sharks lost to the Dallas Stars.  The Sharks won their division and were second in the league overall.  They had a solid season but maybe were worn out after a particularly long seven-game series with the Calgary Flames.  They fought really hard but, in the end, a tripping penalty dealt to Brian Campbell of the Sharks gave the Stars a power play in 4th overtime.  It was an exciting game and it hurt a little to see it end that way.

What were your biggest surprises of these last two series?

So, that’s it.  It’s time to look forward to the Conference Finals!
