NHL 09 on XBOX 360 – Unreadable Discs?

So, I went out and bought NHL 09 last week when it came out and enjoyed a few fun-filled hours with my son until the game stopped working. We thought it might be the copy so we brought it back to Wal-Mart to exchange it for a new one. Guess what? The new disc doesn’t work either. I’ve never actually had a problem like this before so when that second disc didn’t work, I decided to search around on the internet and guess what I found? More people having the exact same problem with NHL 09 but it seems to be confined to the XBOX 360 version. Since I don’t have/don’t want Playstation 3 and the game isn’t available on Wii, I needed to find something that could fix the problem.
Here’s a tip that I found on the IGN boards that worked for me (let’s hope it continues to work):
- Check to see if your game disc works without the Hard Drive or any memory units plugged in.
- If it works, then plug your hard drive back in and clear your cache:
To do this, go to Console Settings, Memory, then press Y for Device Options and press – X,X,LB,RB,X,X – the xbox will ask you if you would like to perform a system maintenance and you say yes. This will erase all game updates you have downloaded but you can get them back. Don’t forget to erase your NHL 09 save data as well … and VOILA!
Don’t get me started on how dumb this problem is…

Umm… EA Sports… we have a problem! It seems EA is catering only to NES Contra fans and hopes you remember that secret code to get your game to work.
Same thing here. Took it back to the store, and exchanged it, for another “bad” one. After three hours, I read what Jeanne had posted, tried it, and now it works! Thanks

Same thing happened to me however after leaving it for a while it worked again! ill try your sggestion though
Anyone still having trouble? I noticed my copy would only work perfectly without the hard drive attached but clearing the cache didnt help me. Ive found that If I load NHL 09 without being signed into my gamer profile on the hard drive I get no problem with the unreadable disc message. So all I do is sign into my profile once Im in the main menu of the game and it seems to work fine after that. Let me know if this helps anyone still struggling

i didn’t even need to delete any saved data i have at least like 60mb of saved game on my hd and all i did was the maintenace and it worked!!
hey guyz i just bought 09 form eb games yesterday n it was fine up until the second period i tried erasing the cache but it didnt do nething it just fucks up again it happens more when i try to sign on line does anybody here no wat to do or wat they did if this happened to them?? thanks guyz would appreciate the help
