NHL All-Star Game – East Beats West!

Marc Savard is mobbed by teammates, from left, Marian Hossa, Evgeni Malkin and Mike Richards after scoring the go-ahead goal with 21 seconds left to lift the Eastern Conference to an 8-7 win in the 56th NHL All-Star Game.ARGH!!! Talk about a close game!  Even though Rick Nash opened the scoring for the west during the NHL All-Star Game 12 seconds in to the first, it was an up and down roller coaster that led to the Eastern Conference taking the win (they won 8-7).

The East were leading heading in to the third and it was all tied-up until Marc Savard scored the game-winning goal with 21 seconds remaining!  The Eastern Conference won the 56th NHL All-Star Game Sunday in Atlanta.

“It felt great,” Savard told Hockey Night in Canada. “I played hard here and I love the fans here, they were great to me. It’s always tough when you come back, but I had a lot of fun.”

Staal added two goals Sunday for the East to skate away with MVP honours.

“It got intense toward the last couple minutes,” Staal, a 23-year-old playing in his second all-star game, told HNIC. “It was a tight game, and I think that’s just the inner competitiveness of the guys. We were fortunate to get out on top.”

Alex Ovechkin also netted a pair for the East, while Rick Nash notched a hat trick for the West, including the game’s opening goal a record 12 seconds in.

“It’s fun playing in these things with these type of players,” Nash told HNIC.

Still, it’s not like they won by a landslide.  The Western Conference team dominated the second period with goalie Evgeni Nabokov stopping all eight shots he faced – including a couple incredible saves against Ilya Kovalchuk.

It was so much fun.  I would have liked to see both Sedin twins and Sidney Crosby there but it was good anyway!
