San Jose Sharks Have No Captain

I don’t know if there’s a more blatant way to let a player know that’s he’s probably going to be traded but it has been announced that Patrick Marleau is no longer the captain of the San Jose Sharks.
I can’t say that I’m completely shocked but I am a little surprised. I know he’s struggled in recent years with his leadership and the Sharks seem to continue to fall apart in the post-season but it’s really too bad. I like Marleau a lot.
The interesting news is that while this all could mean a move for Marleau, I’ve also read that it could be just a wake-up call since the team is open to looking at how the leadership situation goes during training camp next month.
Head coach Todd McLellan said: “I want to see who’s stepping up to the front. We’’ll see as it evolves. I can walk around town and everybody’s giving me a suggestion. We can talk about it internally – everybody has an opinion. I believe it’ll sort itself out.”
There’s a year left in Marleau no-trade contract so it will be interesting to see how this develops. Maybe the embarrassment of this will lead him to waive the clause and accept a trade.
