Steve Moore vs. Todd Bertuzzi – Will There Finally Be a Settlement?

bertuzzi-s_62104 I’m not trying to be a jerk or anything but I really wish this Steve Moore/Todd Bertuzzi thing would just get resolved.  It’s dragging out and just has gone on long enough.

There was a face-to-face meeting in a court-mediated hearing today.  At the meeting, Moore asked for $38 million in lost income and damages after his career was ended when Bertuzzi sucker-punched him and drove his head to the ice (I’m not in complete agreement that the last part was all Bert’s fault) during a game at Vancouver’s GM Place back in March, 2004.

Former Vancouver Canucks coach, Marc Crawford, was also at the meeting.

So far, Bertuzzi has been charged with assault, sentenced to probation/community service (after pleading guilty) and was suspended from the NHL for 17 months.  Additionally, this is what Wikipedia lists as the reasons by the NHL allowed him to come back to the game:

  • Bertuzzi serving a suspension of 20 games, which at the time tied for 4th longest in NHL history (13 regular season games, 7 playoff games)
  • Bertuzzi’s repeated attempts to apologize to Mr. Moore personally
  • Bertuzzi’s forfeited salary ($501,926.39 USD)
  • Lost endorsements (approximately $350,000.00 USD)
  • Significant uncertainty, anxiety, stress and emotional pain caused to Bertuzzi’s family
  • The commissioner’s belief that Bertuzzi was genuinely remorseful and apologetic for his actions

Do you really believe that Moore deserves $38 million?  Come on, now.  Would he have even earned that much?  I really was a big hater of Big Bert but I think he has suffered too.  It was probably the biggest mistake of his life and you can see that he’s a broken player.  He’s messed up, his life is not ever going to be what it would have been.

I say a settlement of $10-12 million (split between Bert and Crawford because there is no way that I believe that coach had nothing to do with this) is very reasonable.

Weigh in – what do you think?

ask yourself this… If Bert hadn’t hit him knocking him unconscious, would that second part have happened? The answer is no. Every injury sustained that night was Bert’s fault. There’s no way around it. And about the $38mm; that seems a little high, but I’d say Moore had at least 7 more years in him. 7*$1mill/year (about what he was making) Plus interest, possible endorsements, and medical expenses…no telling what may happen or hurt when he starts getting older. I’d also have to allow payment of “damages” when someone’s career is ended. That truly sucks. I see $20mm tops.

Hang bert in the town square. anyone who is a pu**y and sucker punches from behind never deserves to play again. Im all for hockey fights but get real that wasnt a fight that was a scared little Pu**y who couldnt take a man face to face. Hang his A** and the canuck gm and let moores family beat them with bats haha. he deserves everything that he has coming and more and as far as his family being under emotional distress, they should, bert should have thought of that before he pulled his little stunt. 38 million is nothing I think he should get 50 Mil and bert in jail for at least 3 years like anyone else would get for breaking someones neck! F*ck the nucks and bert and everyone who thinks he deserves anything other than fines and jailtime.

Wow. It always amazes me how ignorant people can be. I agree that he should be reprimanded for his actions but you honestly have no idea how dumb you sound. Bertuzzi is definitely not the heavyweight champ in the NHL…BUT, Todd is actually a pretty well rounded fighter and Moore did not want any part of the fight with him because….and here is the kicker….he knew full and well that his a** would have been handed to him. That doesn’t exactly constitute him as a p*ssy. $20 mil tops and community service. Do yourself a favor and stay out of big boy conversations. You just end up embarrassing yourself.

Bertuzzi and Crawford should be removed from hockey FOREVER!!!! People envolved in traffic accidents recieve 38 mil. Ending a mans career by assaulting him from behind, should never be tolerated and deserves way more. Whether his career would have ended in 1 yr or 10 yrs, it doesnt matter. Anyone who supports Bert or feels he has suffered enough needs to lay off the crack, cuz they’re a f*king idiot. Next time you are at the store, run up behind someone and attack them and see what the courts do to you. No professional athelete should get special treatment no matter who they are!!!! If anything, they should be dealt with harder because they are in the spotlight making millions per year. Fighting in hockey is part of the sport and is what attracts most fans, when its face to face. But when its done the way this was, it simply takes away from the game.

I agree, Steve Moore is just using this to try and get rich. The guy is a bottom feeder.
