Four Hockey Officials Suspended Over Cherepanov Death

Speculation, rumors and accusations have surrounded the death of 19-year-old, Alexei Cherepanov. The young star, who had been drafted by the New York Rangers, passed away in October 2008 and, along with his chronic heart condition, it’s believed that doping was a factor in his collapse on the Avangard Omsk bench during a game.
Now, it’s being reported that the Continental Hockey League suspended four officials today in connection with the death. “Avangard’s president, general manager and one of its team doctors were suspended indefinitely from positions in the league. Vityaz’s president was also suspended.”

The hockey world was rocked when 19-year-old New York Rangers draft pick, Alexei Cherepanov suddenly died after collapsing during a game in Russia this past October. Thousands attended his funeral while many people wondered what could have happened to the promising young star. I first noticed him during the World Junior Championship in January where he helped Russia defeat the Americans (Team Canada ended up winning gold, though) so I was shocked to learn that he had passed away.
