Jacques Martin Named New Canadiens Coach

The Montreal Canadiens have named a new coach in what we can only hope is a sign that things are starting to settle down for the club.  Jacques Martin is the new head coach, marking his fourth NHL coaching gig (he’s been with the Florida Panthers, St. Louis Blues and the Ottawa Senators).  In a related announcement, it was revealed that goaltending coach Roland Melanson would not be returning next year.

Yesterday, I read a headline that the Montreal Canadiens for sale and I kind of dismissed it because I didn’t think I had read it correctly but then while I was watching the highlights last night, they started talking about it.  With the Habs on a downward spiral (they’ve lost the last five games) and the economy not being much better, Canadiens president Pierre Boivin, is reporting that owner George Gillett is considering selling some of his assets, including the Habs.  “We’re not hiding it; we’re going through a very difficult economic period,” Boivin told Montreal’s La Presse newspaper (it’s …read more

Habs Fire Carbonneau, Gainey Claims Head Coach Job for Himself

Guy Carbonneau was fired as the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens yesterday.  He was close to completing his third season in the job.  With 16 regular season, GM/executive VP Bob Gainey will coach the Habs for the rest of the year along with associate coach Doug Jarvis and assistant coaches Kirk Muller and Roland Melanson.Of the situation, Gainey said: "Not long ago, I responded to a question that was asked to me about my best decision since taking over as general manager, and that Guy was my best decision.  The decision today can be seen as a contradiction, but …read more
