The netminder was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure after his heart started racing. Apparently, the feeling he got was similar to the problems he experienced during training camp. He underwent a procedure to correct the issue but it is possible that it didn’t work. I’ve had that same procedure done (ablation) and I had to do it three times before it was truly better.

At least head coach Ron Wilson wasn’t taking any chances and he sent the goalie to the hospital and had Joey MacDonald replace him. “I’m not going to be responsible for someone keeling over during a game,” said Wilson. “A game is not that important.”

I completely agree.

So, we’re supposed to have some sort of update tomorrow so I am hoping all will be well and he’ll be cleared to play – safely.

I’m pretty bummed about this news but Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender, Jonas Gustavsson, is on the injured reserve list after suffering from a bit of a groin pull. It doesn’t sound too serious but you never know with these things.

Anyone who was looking forward to seeing Vesa Toskala fight to retain his #1 spot with “The Monster” on his ass is going to have to wait. “Vesa is our number one goalie anyway and he’ll play until further notice,” coach Ron Wilson said. “This is an opportunity for him to take charge now without looking over his shoulder.”

You said it, Wilson. Something tells me that Toskala isn’t sending Gustavsson any get well vibes…

Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke claims that his trip over to Sweden right before the free agent deadline was to talk to goaltender, Jonas Gustavsson, and not the Sedin twins. Since the NHL is investigating the team for tampering we might find out a little more but it’s pretty clear that he was able to persuade the Swedish netminder since he has decided to sign a one-year $810,000 (plus a $90,000 signing bonus) deal with the Leafs.

I’m interested in how this might affect Toronto’s stats next year since I’ve heard a lot of good thing about Gustavsson. I know that his nickname is “The Monster” and some have called him the best non-NHL goaltender and I can see why – last year while he played for Farjestad in the Swedish Elite League, he posted a 1.96 goals against average and a .932 save percentage. His team went on to win the league championship.
