Mat Sundin Retires From the NHL

Mats Sundin has officially retired from the NHL.  He made the announcement from Sweden yesterday.  The former Toronto Maple Leafs captain said:  ”It was just time, I think. Obviously, it’s not an easy decision but I feel with body and soul right now, it’s time to quit my professional career as a hockey player.”

“I’m very glad that I played last season with the Vancouver Canucks and I think I needed that. But now with the season getting started again, it actually feels nice not having to practice every day and play games every other day so I think this is …read more

Mats Sundin Opts Out of 2010 Olympics

Mats Sundin has made a very mature decision – he will not be on Sweden’s roster at the upcoming 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.  The veteran center is, clearly, a great hockey player but I think he realizes that his country stands a better chance with him cheering from the sidelines.
At 38 years old, Sundin has seen better days and he has made it clear that his decision on the matter is final:  "There will be no Olympics in Vancouver for me next year. I will not change my mind.  I think it’s time that the next generation takes over. …read more

Canucks Suck More With Sundin in Lineup

Where is this miracle on ice we’ve been waiting months to see?  Former Toronto Maple Leafs team captain, Mats Sundin, was supposed to improve the chances that the Vancouver Canucks would make the playoffs, yet, with him and goaltender, Roberto Luongo, back in the lineup, the team continues to drop points.
In eight games, the Canucks have just one win with Sundin on the ice.  Sometimes, he’s even a liability.  Last night, he was scoreless again unless you count the penalty he gave up that allowed the Nashville Predators to put one up on the board.  They ended up …read more

Sundin Triumphant in First Game as Canuck

Sundin Triumphant in First Game as Canuck

It finally happened. Mats Sundin graced the hockey world with his presence by debuting as a member of the Vancouver Canucks during tonight’s game against the Edmonton Oilers. I joked that he was waiting for the planets to be aligned and, well, maybe it happened for the guy since the Nucks beat the Oilers 4-2.
The veteran centre hadn’t dressed for a game since the end of last season so it’s been a good nine months since he played and he looked pretty good.  It wasn’t anything explosive tonight but I’m curious to see what he brings to the table in …read more

Sundin’s a Canuck But When Will He Play?

After dragging out his decision about where he would be playing, former Toronto Maple Leafs captain, Mats Sundin, finally picked the Vancouver Canucks but he has yet to dress for a game.  Sure, he’s been skating and praciting with his new team but when is he going to play?
On Sunday, Sundin said: "I haven’t had one practice yet with the whole group and it’s going to be two days of real full practices (following tonight’s game).  I think then we can evaluate how everything feels. I hope I’m going to feel great after two practices and obviously I want …read more

Mats Sundin Picks the Vancouver Canucks

Mats Sundin Picks the Vancouver Canucks

Finally, after what seems like years of speculation, Mats Sundin has chosen to continue playing in the NHL for an 18th season by accepting the offer from the Vancouver Canucks, which is what I thought he would do.
In a statement, Sundin said:  “I am truly excited to be joining the Canucks.  Once I made the decision to return to play a few weeks ago, the Vancouver opportunity was simply the best overall fit. I want to thank Mike Gillis and the entire Canucks organization for their professionalism throughout this entire process.”
Canucks GM, Mike Gillis, said:  “We are very excited …read more

Sundin To Choose Between Rangers and Canucks… I’m Starting Not to Care

Sundin To Choose Between Rangers and Canucks… I’m Starting Not to Care

Seriously, Mats Sundin and the whole drawn-out drama over what team he’s going to join has gotten boring for me.  He’s going to wait until he’s too old to play well, if he’s not careful.
Anyway, the news now is that Sundin has narrowed his choices down to the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks.  The Canucks can offer more money but New York seems like a better fit so I’m not sure how this is going to go.  His agent said that he expects Sundin to make his decision in the next week so that “he can join one …read more
