After 14 seasons in the NHL, goaltender Olaf Kolzig is hanging up his skates. He’s such a well-loved netminder that it’s sad to see him go but it has also been sad to see him on teams that didn’t allow him to really show his full potential for most of his career.
He leaves behind an impressive set of statistics:

He is ranked 21st in the NHL with 303 career wins
Posted 35 shutouts in 719 games
Leaves with a 2.71 GAA and a .906 save %

In honor of Olie’s career, I thought it was a perfect time for a montage. I know there are a lot of good ones out there so I just picked one. It doesn’t include any highlights from his time in Toronto but were there really many of those anyway?

On TSN, Brian Burke refused to comment on a deal that saw goaltender, Olaf Kolzig, defencemen Jamie Heward and Andy Rogers AND a fourth-round draft pick traded from the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a prospect Richard Petiot.
Clearly, this is a salary cap deal that will need to be reviewed by the NHL since the 26-year-old Petiot is not worth all of those players. He has three goals, 14 assists in 45 games with Toronto Marlies of the AHL so far this season.

Kolzig is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer but will be off the roster for the remainder of the season due to an arm injury. In the eight games that he did play, he had a 2-4-1 record with an .898 save percentage.

Heward is also on the injured reserve list with a concussion. He has two assists in 13 games this season and is sidelined indefinitely.

Rogers has been in the AHL all season.

As if the Tampa Bay Lightning aren’t struggling enough, they’ve been dealt yet another blow – backup goaltender, Olaf Kolzig will be out of the lineup for about 3-4 weeks after a distal biceps tendon rupture in his left arm.
The netminder is scheduled to have surgery on Saturday and will probably be out until next season unless, of course, the Lightning make the playoffs. Since the Bolts have a snowball’s chance in hell of making it to the postseason, this basically means that we won’t be seeing Kolzig until some time this fall.
