Roberto Luongo Out With Fractured Rib

After multiple reports said that Vancouver Canucks goaltender, Roberto Luongo, would be out of the lineup indefinitely, the team is relieved to learn that he will probably only miss a week due to a hairline fracture in his ribs.

He got hurt during Saturday night’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.  “It was a bad angle shot from (Leafs’ forward Niklas) Hagman in the corner and I just kind of went one knee down and the puck just hit me in the seam of my chest protector,” Luongo said.  “It kind of hurt, but the adrenaline was going so I finished …read more

What the Heck is Wrong With Luongo?

I hear the curse of long-term contracts knocking on the door of Vancouver Canucks goaltender, Roberto Luongo.  Seriously, friends.  I know it’s so early in the season but this is definitely worth talking about.

The Canucks lost 5-3 to the Columbus Blue Jackets last night.  I’ll get to the details on this nightmare but, first, let’s look at their start to this season so far.  They’ve played three games and they’ve lost three games.
I watched their opener since it was against the Calgary Flames and almost instantly I was asking if there was something off about Luongo.  I shrugged it off …read more

Kiprusoff and Phaneuf Look Like Old Selves

Kiprusoff and Phaneuf Look Like Old Selves

As a Calgary Flames fan, the first couple weeks are pretty brutal especially since for the last few seasons, Miikka Kiprusoff is downright painful to watch during the beginning of the season.  Last night’s season opener against the Vancouver Canucks gave me hope that bringing Brent Sutter on as the new head coach is going to make a big difference – for the better.
The Flames in general were peppier and more aggressive than usual and Kipper was just part of their 5-3 victory.  He stopped 39 of the 42 shots he faced including one save that really should have gone …read more

Vancouver Gives Luongo 12-Year Deal

Vancouver Gives Luongo 12-Year Deal

It’s about flipping time.  I really thought the Vancouver Canucks would have been aggressive about re-signing captain and goaltender, Roberto Luongo, but, instead, they waited until just a month before the season began.
Luongo was offered a pretty sweet deal, though, but if you’re like me, you think these long-term contracts are a jinx.  The netminder has signed on for 12 more years with the club for a whopping $64 million.  This means that he will be with the team until the 2021-22 season.  I swear that doesn’t even sound right!
GM Mike Gillis said of the deal: "Roberto Luongo is …read more

Why Doesn’t Luongo Have a New Deal Yet?

Why Doesn’t Luongo Have a New Deal Yet?

Yesterday, I read a familiar headline and it just irritated me (which is saying a lot since the whole Phoenix Coyotes drama is really testing my sanity) – “Luongo Contract Negotiations Deadline Set.”
The Vancouver Canucks are starting to piss me off.  Earlier this summer, they dragged their feet over renewing their contract with the Sedin Twins and I think that’s far more understandable that this weirdness with Roberto Luongo.
Apparently, the netminder and the team have until September 13, 2009 to come up with something and I’m pretty shocked.  We’re not talking about some body on the ice – Luongo is …read more

Arena Named for Goalie Roberto Luongo

Arena Named for Goalie Roberto Luongo

Before you get too excited, we’re not talking about GM Place being renamed in honor of the Vancouver Canucks netminder (and captain) but, regardless of the size of the venue, it’s still pretty cool to have something named after you.
The small arena in St. Leonard, Quebec (it’s an east-end neighborhood in Montreal) where Luongo first donned goalie pads was renamed the Roberto Luongo Arena after an inauguration ceremony on Saturday.  I’m guessing he’s proven himself enough to warrant the dedication.
Luongo showed up and signed autographs for hundreds of fans and then enjoyed the ultimate “I told you so” moment …read more

Luongo Wins Scotiabank Fan Fav Award

Jeremy Roehnick really struggled while he was presenting the very first “Scotiabank Fan Fav” Award (yes, that’s spelled correctly) but finally it was named that Vancouver Canucks goaltender, Roberto Luongo, was named the recipient.  I couldn’t help but laugh when he was booed.
To win the prize, Luongo beat out Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh), Alexander Ovechkin (Washington) and fellow goaltenders Miikka Kiprusoff (Calgary) and Martin Brodeur.  Other nominees included Columbus netminder Steve Mason, Washington’s Mike Green, Carolina’s Eric Staal and San Jose’s Evgeni Nabokov.

Chicago Knocks Vancouver Out of Playoffs

Chicago Knocks Vancouver Out of Playoffs

The Vancouver Canucks were eliminated from the 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs last night by the Chicago Blackhawks.  Many Canadians (not including me) were saddened by the fact that the last team from Canada was knocked out of the postseason.
The victory can be attributed to the younger Chicago players who played the most important role in winning the high scoring game (final score 7-5).   Budding star, Patrick Kane recorded his first playoff hat trick while Jonathan Toews scored the go-ahead goal in that insane third period.  This is the first time the team will compete in the Western Conference finals since …read more

Canucks Take 2-1 Series Lead Over Blackhawks

Canucks Take 2-1 Series Lead Over Blackhawks

The Vancouver Canucks have taken a 2-1 lead in the second round series against the Chicago Blackhawks.  I thought this game was going to be a lot different, especially with it taking place in Chicago, but the Canucks skated away with a 3-1 victory.

Neither goaltender was tested too much with Roberto Luongo (Vancouver) turning away 23 of the 24 shots on goal while Nikolai Khabibulin managed to only save 18 of the 21 shots he faced.
Mason Raymond opened the scoring for Vancouver in the first, which was a period filled with penalties on both sides.  Patrick Kane (Chicago) …read more

Is Luongo Really Ready to Return – Again?

Is this it (for real this time)?  Will Vancouver Canucks goaltender, Roberto Luongo, return to the lineup after almost two months on the bench?
He’s saying that he feels like his groin injury is 100% healed and that during a 75-minute practice, he was able to play without holding anything back.  On the Canucks website, he said: "I feel back to normal, so that’s good and I’m excited about it.  It’s nice to be back. One full practice after not playing for seven weeks, I’m not sure I’m ready to play a game, but like I said it’s nice …read more
