Flames and Maple Leafs Make HUGE Trades!

Flames and Maple Leafs Make HUGE Trades!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I woke up this morning to some major news.  The Calgary Flames have traded Dion Phaneuf along with forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and prospect defenceman Keith Aulie to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.

Do you see some of the names in this trade?!?!  Holy crap!  Last night, right before the Flames took on the Oilers in the latest Battle of Alberta, I said that I thought they would win but that they would dump Neuf by morning and here we are.  I’m incredibly disappointed.
It’s the best thing for …read more

Theoren Fleury Attacks the Calgary Flames

It’s a funny thing – just the other day I was talking to a complete stranger about how crappy it was for the Calgary Flames to refuse to give Theoren Fleury a second chance after he performed so well during the preseason.  I’m guessing Fleury also thought he got the shaft because he ripped the team on his blog.
It seemed like the comeback of a lifetime.  Fleury had been a huge hero here in Calgary but his life fell apart because of his drug addiction and wild behavior.  He recently revealed, in his autobiography, that he was raped by a …read more

Best Hockey Fights of The Decade

The decade is coming to an end in just a few hours and I thought it would be great to look back at some of the best hockey fights of the past 10 years.  Puck Daddy put up his list of favorites a few days ago and I’m sure you will have yours as well.  I’d love to hear which scrap you think has been the best (and why) from this past decade.
I’m sure you know that I’m a Calgary Flames fan but my selection really is a coincidence.  I have chosen their melee with the Nashville Predators on March …read more

Calgary Flames Make History

The Calgary Flames had a historic night – for the first time in franchise history, the team has recorded a point in 10 consecutive games.  That’s very impressive, especially since they did it with such a huge win.

Goaltender, Miikka Kiprusoff, got his third shutout of the season in the Flames’ 5-0 victory over the Nashville Predators, who had been on a bit of a hot streak.
The best part is that it looks like Calgary is utilizing all of their players and it’s paying off.  They’ve won their third straight road game and that’s with backup Curtis McElhinney in net for …read more

Kiprusoff Shuts Out Struggling Red Wings

Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 40 shots on goal to earn his second shutout of the season when the Calgary Flames took on the Detroit Red Wings last night.  I’m happy for Kip since I think this is a real confidence booster for him but I do have to make note of the raw deal that was handed to Detroit.

Before you jump all over me, let me just say that I don’t particularly like the Red Wings so I’m not trying to defend their honor or anything.  They did, however, put the puck in the net twice, only to have both goals …read more

Iginla’s Hat Trick Redeems Calgary Flames

After their embarrassing 7-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks the other night, the Calgary Flames had a lot of ground to cover.  I’m sure the fact that the media was all over the alleged screaming match between coach, Brent Sutter, and unpredictable defenceman, Dion Phaneuf, didn’t help the team’s focus.  I don’t know if I like all of Sutter’s tactics but when you see a game like the one yesterday afternoon, it’s hard to argue.
The Flames would have to be heartless to not have been affected by that awful loss and their pattern in recent seasons has been to fall …read more

Kiprusoff Finally Earns Shutout Against Habs

As a Calgary Flames fan, I’ve had a really hard time watching goaltender, Miikka Kiprusoff, go from this incredible talent with so much promise, to a struggling player.  I realize that he was exceptionally good when he joined the team but I never figured it was a fluke.  I also know that he had a hard time with Mike Keenan as the head coach over the past couple seasons since their tension was visibly obvious which is pretty significant considering how reserved Kipper is.

When they announced that Brent Sutter would be coming over from the New Jersey Devils, I was …read more

Did Calgary Flames Get H1N1 Shot Priority?

I live in Calgary and, like many places in the world, the locals are scrambling to get vaccinated against the H1N1 virus (a.k.a. swine flu).  The Canadian government isn’t charging residents for the shot but each province has to manage how they get rolled out.
Unfortunately, things have been chaotic and disorganized so some people have had to wait as much as 7 hours while others have even been turned away.  Needless to say, Alberta has some pretty frustrated residents and some have freaked out over reports that the Calgary Flames and their families were vaccinated against the virus in a …read more

Calgary’s Sjostrom Great Spin-O-Rama Goal

Calgary’s Sjostrom Great Spin-O-Rama Goal

Did you catch the Columbus Blue Jackets at Calgary Flames game last night?  The Flames won 6-3 and, while I was happy with the result, it was the goal by Fredrik Sjostrom that served as the highlight for me.
Sure, Calgary didn’t really need it with 4:05 left in the third since they were already up two goals but since Sjostrom is new to the team, I haven’t really seen what he can do and last night I was totally surprised.

He approached the net and couldn’t get a shot away, faked out Columbus goalie, Steve Mason, and then did a spin-o-rama …read more

Calgary Flames Hold on to Perfect Record

My Calgary Flames are #1 in the league right now and are off to a perfect start to the 2009-2010 season.  Yes, I realize it’s still very early but this is historic.  According to TSN, “the only other time the Flames won four straight games to start a season was when they captured their first-ever Pacific Division title back in 1993-94.”
The improved start comes along with new head coach, Brent Sutter, and I really think that he is making a major difference with the players and goaltender, Miikka Kiprusoff.  We’re seeing the big names doing well but also guys like …read more
