Jason Spezza Out With Serious Knee Injury

It’s not good news for the Ottawa Senators.  Star centre, Jason Spezza, could be out of the lineup for eight weeks with a serious knee injury.  He had an MRI yesterday to find out how bad it is and, while it won’t require surgery, it is going to take a long time to heal.

Spezza got injured late in the third period during Monday night’s loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs which is not great considering the team’s mediocre play.
After making contact with Lee Stempniak, it was clear that something was wrong with Spezza’s right leg and he left the ice …read more

Boston Bruins Lose Lucic for Four Weeks

Milan Lucic has suffered a high ankle sprain that has left him unable to play since November 25th and now it’s being announced that he will be on the injured reserve list for four weeks.

This is a bad season for Lucic.  A fractured finger kept him off the ice for 14 games and he ended up having surgery in October and now this.  He has played 10 games and posted just two goals and three assists.
In the meantime, Andy Wozniewski and Adam McQuaid have been called up from the AHL.

Habs Trying to Give Halak to the Flyers

I’m pretty disappointed to learn that the Montreal Canadiens are trying to pawn goaltender, Jaroslav Halak, off on the Philadelphia Flyers. I am not shocked, of course, since Montreal has a history of dumping good players.

Sure, Halak isn’t a #1 goalie but he has potential and I think he’s a very worthy backup to Carey Price.  In fact, he was compensating so much for the struggling netminder that even Price said that he wanted Halak in net.
Now that Halak has said that he wants to play more, Montreal GM Bob Gainey has offered him to the Flyers.  They could use …read more

Cool Gift Idea: Hockey Stick Putter

Do you, or someone that you know, like both hockey and golf?  If so, you might want to check out the Hockey Stick Putter.  It’s basically what it sounds like – a golf putter that looks like a hockey stick.
I know that some novelty items are pretty cheap but this one is finely-tuned with precise weighting since it features a compression molded graphite shaft with a cast aluminum alloy head.  It’s cool because a former Division I hockey player designed it to be useable on the golf course instead of just being something that is displayed on a wall in …read more

Chelios Turns Down NHL Offer, Staying in AHL!

Wow!  This one surprised me.  Chris Chelios has been playing in the AHL for the Chicago Wolves but the star player, who will turn 48 next month, has revealed that he turned down a chance to return to the NHL almost two weeks ago in favor of staying in the lower level league.

TSN had some interesting quotes:
"It would have to take a pretty unique situation (to sign with an NHL team).  Not to say I’d be picking and choosing, but I think I’m in a really great situation in Chicago here. It’s much better to be one of the …read more

Stamkos and Malone Injuries Not Too Serious

I’m sure the Tampa Bay Lightning are breathing a collective sigh of relief.  During their game earlier this week against the Edmonton Oilers, their two top scorers, Steven Stamkos and Ryan Malone, left the ice and didn’t return but it’s now being reported that the injuries don’t appear to be serious.

Stamkos is suffering from some sort of upper-body injury while Malone got hurt on his lower body.  They are being listed as “day-to-day” but can I just take this opportunity to say that Vincent Lecavalier needs to wake the hell up.  We’ve got Stamkos and Malone carrying this team while …read more

Gretzky to Coach Worlds? Are They Stupid?

There’s all kinds of chatter about the possibility of Wayne Gretzky serving as Canada’s head coach at the 2010 IIHF World Hockey Championship.  This comes not long after the announcement that his former teammate, Mark Messier, would be the team’s general manager.  Great.  Now they can continue their bromance.

Don’t get me wrong – these two had a lot of success together – but this is just an example of how really good and deserving people get looked over just because they don’t have the right connections.  Of course, this isn’t official yet but the fact that it’s a “real possibility” …read more

Sucker Punch Earns 4 Days and 29 Minutes In Penalties!

Wow.  Every player wants to go into the NHL history books for something they did on the ice but I’m sure Dan Carcillo would rather be remembered in a different way.
The Philadelphia Flyers winger delivered a sucker punch to Washington Capitals’ Matt Bradley which has ended up costing him 4 days in suspensions plus a whopping 29 minutes in penalties.  What a bad night for Philly since they lost 8-2 on home ice.
Carcillo is “the first player in NHL history to draw 29 minutes in penalties without drawing a single minute from his opponent.”  What an honor!
If this wasn’t this …read more

Blackhawks Give Kane, Toews and Keith Extensions

Blackhawks Give Kane, Toews and Keith Extensions

This one was a no-brainer.  The Chicago Blackhawks have extended the contracts of Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith.
The deals are pretty frickin’ unbelievable.  Kane and Toews were given five-year deals worth US$31.5 million each while d-man, Keith, was handed a 13-year contract worth $72 million.  That’s even better than that crazy off-season 12-year, $62.8 million contract given to Marian Hossa.

“We are a close group of guys and there’s no individual player who is bigger than the team,” Keith said. “I would certainly rather have these two guys up here at the same time, as well, and take a …read more

Should Gustavsson Be Allowed To Play?

Should Gustavsson Be Allowed To Play?

Before he made his NHL debut, I was so excited to see what Jonas Gustavsson was going to add to the Toronto Maple Leafs roster (since they need all the help they can get) because I would like to see them become serious competitors.  Unfortunately, things haven’t been very easy for the Swedish goaltender.

The netminder was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure after his heart started racing.  Apparently, the feeling he got was similar to the problems he experienced during training camp.  He underwent a procedure to correct the issue but it is possible that it didn’t work.  …read more
