McCabe a Good Choice for Florida Captain?

Bryan McCabe was named the new captain of the Florida Panthers last week and I have to say that I was a little bit surprised since he’s only been with the team for a year but I think he could be a good fit. He’s a natural leader and has experience as the captain of the New York Islanders and as an assistant captain with each team he’s ever dressed with over his 14 year career.
On their official website, head coach Peter DeBoer made the following announcement: “The selection of Bryan as the captain of our club was something that …read more

Despite being the topic of so much speculation, Jay Bouwmeester is staying with the Florida Panthers. I’m surprised, I thought the Panthers were going to deal him away in a big trade but I guess I was wrong…

Zednik Victorious on Anniversary of Throat Slash

Who can forget the horrific accident that resulted in the throat of Richard Zednik being slashed last year? To be honest, it was so terrible that I wasn’t sure he’d ever feel comfortable on the ice again. I’m glad I was wrong.
On the anniversary of the incident, Zednik had an amazing night on the ice as his Florida Panthers enjoyed a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. At 1:02 in OT, Zednik scored his second goal of the night – the game winner – and secured the win for his team.
"It’s amazing," said Zednik. "Exactly one year later …read more

It was another wild night last night! There were several high-scoring games but I think the most intense matchup was between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Dallas Stars. I think this is further proof that some of the trades Columbus has made just might make them real contenders this year. I was happy to see that former Calgary Flames player, Kristian Huselius, seems to be fitting in nicely with the club already having scored for the Blue Jackets once last night. The game-winner was knocked in by Rick Nash in overtime.
Here are the rest of last night’s …read more
McCabe Officially Traded To Florida

It’s official, friends. Bryan McCabe is one of the Florida Panthers. The veteran defenceman has left the Toronto Maple Leafs for a deal that will pay him $4.15 million for the next three years. In order for the deal to take place, McCabe had to waive his no-movement clause. In exchange, the Leafs will get d-man, Mike Van Ryn and a fourth round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft.
What do you think of this trade? Is this a bad idea? I am not the biggest fan of the Panthers but it will be interesting to see if he fits in …read more
2008-2009 Season – Year of Rookie Coaches

Next season, we are going to see several “rookie” coaches behind the benches across the NHL. We’ve got Todd McLellan, an assistant to Stanley Cup-winning coach, Mike Babcock, heading over to lead the San Jose Sharks.
The Ottawa Senators will now be under the direction of Craig Hartsburg, who will join the NHL after a successful run in the OHL in Sault Ste. Marie (I should not that he did try the NHL with Chicago and Anaheim but was just average).
The Florida Panthers will be led by Peter DeBoer, who was also being considered for the Ottawa position. He has …read more

This is great for the Florida Panthers. It’s being reported that they have signed 20-year-old, Michael Frolick, who is considered one of their top prospects. He was a first-round draft pick back (10th overall) in 2006 and has had 24 goals and 65 points in 45 games this past season with Rimouski of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He has also represented the Czech Republic at the World Junior Championships in 2006 and 2007.
”I think it’s great for the organization to get (Frolik) signed,” said Panthers general manager Jacques Martin. ”Now we have all our kids signed to …read more
Zednik Knew He Was in Big Trouble

Richard Zednik said he felt like he had been stabbed in the neck when his throat was cut earlier this month during a game and knew he had to get to the bench as quickly as possible. Once there, the Florida Panthers right wing thought of his 4-year-old daughter, Ella. “I remember thinking, ‘Am I going to see her grow up?’” Zednik said. He also said he’s going to start wearing a neck guard. Good idea…

Zednik’s Throat Cut By Skate Blade – In Stable Condition

This is scary! Florida Panthers forward Richard Zednik was rushed to a Buffalo area hospital after the skate blade of teammate Olli Jokinen struck the side of Zednik’s neck. Zednik skated over to the Panthers’ bench as blood poured onto the ice. Last I heard, he was undergoing surgery. Thanks to Iron Mike of Educated Bet for alerting me so quickly!
This comes just a day after linesman Pat Dapuzzo took a skate blade in the face!
