Kobasew Traded to Minnesota Wild

Chuck Kobasew has been traded from the Boston Bruins to the Minnesota Wild after only seven games.  I am a little surprised by this deal but it just seems like a move that was more motivated by the salary cap than anything else.
The Bruins picked up winger, Craig Weller, and the rights to prospect, Alexander Fallstrom, in exchange for the veteran forward.
Overall, I don’t think it’s a bad move for Kobasew since I think he will fit right into their lineup and I actually think the Wild are getting the better end of this deal.  They need all the help …read more

Cole Off Hurricanes Roster for 4-6 Weeks

Cole Off Hurricanes Roster for 4-6 Weeks

As if the Carolina Hurricanes aren’t already off to a bad enough start, they’ve now lost Erik Cole for 4-6 weeks.  The power forward seems to have bad luck with injuries and now he’ll be sitting out after an MRI showed a fracture in his lower left leg.
The break happened after he made contact with Boston Bruins defenceman, Dennis Wideman, during their terrible loss on Saturday night.
There was so much action during that game that I have to admit that I had almost forgotten about this injury and I’m disappointed that it is this serious.  Honestly, though, you can pretty …read more

Hurricanes and Bruins Renew Rivalry

Hurricanes and Bruins Renew Rivalry

The Boston Bruins still seem a little pissed off at the Carolina Hurricanes after they eliminated them from the playoffs last year and they also appeared to want to prove themselves after suffering an embarrassing 4-1 loss against the Washington Capitals in the season opener on Thursday night.

The Bruins definitely came out on the ice and proved that, when they are on their game, they are virtually unstoppable.  Michael Ryder and Blake Wheeler put the puck in the back of the net just 26 seconds apart in the first period and the team scored four-power play goals to beat the …read more

Maple Leafs Improve Lineup With Kessel

The Toronto Maple Leafs are shaping up to be a much better team this season and they’ve now beefed up their lineup by acquiring Phil Kessel from the Boston Bruins.  I think it’s a pretty significant loss for the Bruins but they’ve got such a strong roster that I think they cannot afford to share the wealth.

Besides, like the Dany Heatley drama, Kessel wasn’t happy with the team and eagerly signed a five-year deal worth $27 million deal despite the fact that the Nashville Predators and the New York Rangers had expressed some interest.
Leafs GM Brian Burke said: “Bringing Phil …read more

Boston Bruins Sign Wozniewski

The Boston Bruins have added a little depth to their roster by signing defenceman, Andy Wozniewski, who played with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2007-2008 and then with the St. Louis Blues in the 2008-2009 season.

Basically, he played 74 minor league games last year (3 goals, 18 assists and 82 penalty minutes) between the St. Louis and Pittsburgh organizations but I’m not really overly optimistic about what he’s going to add to Boston’s lineup.
This has just fueled rumors about Phil Kessel’s potential future on the Boston roster.  Some think this is a sign that the team is getting ready …read more

Boston Bruins Lock Up Claude Julien

Boston Bruins Lock Up Claude Julien

I am not surprised to learn that the Boston Bruins have locked up head coach, Claude Julien, in a multiyear deal.  He’s done a great job with the team and, even though they didn’t go all the way in the postseason, they have made the playoffs in each of his two first seasons.

In what seems like a rare moment between NHL coaches and the team administrators, Julien spoke about how important it is to feel that he has the support of the upper management.
If a coach feels like no one has any confidence in what he’s doing, I …read more

Boston Bruins Sign Derek Morris

Boston Bruins Sign Derek Morris

The Boston Bruins are busy building up their defensive line up after shipping Aaron Ward to the Carolina Hurricanes. The club has signed Derek Morris to a one-year deal worth $3.3 million.

During his 10 year career in the NHL, he has played for the New York Rangers, Phoenix Coyotes, Colorado Avalanche and Calgary Flames while splitting his 75 games last season between the Rangers and the Coyotes.  He had five goals and 15 assists.

Ward Now Teammates With Sucker Puncher

The Carolina Hurricanes have reacquired defenceman, Aaron Ward, in a trade that sent Patrick Eaves to the Boston Bruins.  The deal also included a fourth-round draft pick next year.
Canes GM, Jim Rutherford, seems happy to have Ward back with the team: “With this trade, our defence really takes shape.  We envision him complementing Joni Pitkanen well as a defensive pairing.”  I agree that it will be good for Carolina to have Ward back in the lineup.  He still lives in Raleigh and he helped the team capture their first Stanley Cup back in 2006.

Of course, a lot of fans are …read more

Chara Takes Home 2009 Norris Trophy

Kevin Connolly of HBO’s Entourage helped present the award for this year’s James Norris Memorial Trophy.  It was presented to Boston Bruins captain, Zdeno Chara, who took his time and really enjoyed accepting the award.

After talking a bit about what winning means to him, he explained that he was cut from every team he played on as a kid and said he “shouldn’t have made it past juniors.”
He wanted to send a message to all of the kids at home who were watching the awards since many of them have probably been turned away by coaches that didn’t …read more

Claude Julien Wins Jack Adams Trophy

Film producer Jerry Bruckheimer helped present the Jack Adams Award which recognizes the league’s best coaches.  Even though I thought Andy Murray deserved to win for all his hard work with the St. Louis Blues, the prize was given to Claude Julien of the Boston Bruins.
He was pretty long-winded in his acceptance speech which was delivered in both English and French.  It’s nice that he was recognized, though, because the Bruins had an incredible season.
