Zajac Signs Multi-year Deal with Devils

In a moved that negated the need for an arbitration hearing, the New Jersey Devils offered center, Travis Zajac, a new multi-year contract but not specific details were disclosed.

General Manager Lou Lamoriello had the following to say about the deal: “During his previous three seasons in the National Hockey League, Travis Zajac has proven to be among the top young players in the game, and has developed into one of the core players on our team.  We are pleased that we were able to work out a long-term agreement.”

Travis Zajac

The 24-year-old enjoyed some career highs during the 2008-2009 season and I’m not surprised that the Devils want to keep him.  He recorded 20 goals, 42 assists, 62 points, and a team-leading plus-33 mark in 82 game.  He also scored a goal and had three assists in the playoffs (in seven games).

With Brent Sutter leaving to take over the reins with the Calgary Flames, it will be interesting to see how a young player like Zajac responds to the slower-paced, methodical style of returning coach, Jacque Lemaire.
