2007 College World Series Schedule Announced

June 12, 2007 by Geoff Young

The College World Series schedule is now available. Two teams from California — UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton — have made it to Omaha.

My adopted team, Irvine, plays Saturday against Arizona State. First pitch is 11 a.m. PT and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Here’s the thing about the Anteaters. Ordinarily you wouldn’t want your team to “suck” but if my understanding of anteater physiology is correct, that’s pretty much what this particular animal does to its prey.

It’s all very confusing…

Update: Upon further review, it appears that “lick” is a more appropriate verb. Very well, then; we’ll go with that instead.

    Hey, Cool.
    Zot! ZOT!

    From BaseballAmerica chat:

Q: What do you think are the chances of ASU’s bats against UCI’s pitching and how do you think UCI’s offense would fare against ASU’s pitching (probably Leake for the first game)

Aaron Fitt: For my money, that is the most compelling game of the Omaha openers. Irvine has gotten to the CWS with pitching, defense, speed and timely hitting, while Arizona State has largely bludgeoned its way here. But the Sun Devils are also an excellent defensive team, and they are underrated on the mound. Leake is in for a challenge against an Irvine team that puts constant pressure on the defense and really forces the opposing pitcher to be on his toes; if I were Pat Murphy, I might go with the more experienced lefty Josh Satow in that first game to try to keep that UCI running game in check. I suspect the Anteaters will go with Scott Gorgen, who has been perhaps the best pitcher in the nation over the last month. He shut down Texas and Wichita State, and I bet he gives that mighty ASU offense all it can handle. Great matchup.

    GO OWLS!

An animal about as formidable as an anteater. But I’d like to think Rice has a much better chance than UCI. ;)

  4. Didi says:

I don’t think worry about the Owls. They can take care of themselves.
First thing first, get past the Sundevils.

    Zot! ZOT!

While I love the name “Anteaters” and want to see them do very well in the series, I’m afraid my Beavers are going to have to do it again, IF they can get a little decent hitting. As was the case last year, I think the Beavs have the strongest starters/bullpen in the series.

  6. Didi says:

    Hmmm….here it goes:
when the Anteaters take the field this afternoon against the defending champion Beavers, and the Anteaters wins, using the corrected verb above, the headline will be reading…. ;)

    Go Anteaters! ZOT! ZOT! ZOT!

  7. Didi says:

Of course, in the second game, if the Beavers wins, it’ll be: The Beavers, takes a licking and keeps on ticking. :)

  8. jon jay says:

never make it to game two, didi. Beavs will chew the eaters a new you-know-what in the first. Maybe next year, sport.

  9. Didi says:

Ah, man. The image of a beaver chewing the snout off an anteater won’t leave my mind, now.

I’m wary that extra rest the Beavers got versus the extra innings the Anteaters already played in is going to tip the scale the Beavers way.

OTOH, The Beavers went through the loser bracket last year to win it all. So, it can happen again.

Go Anteaters! ZOT! ZOT! ZOT! ZOT!

  10. Didi says:

Good luck to the Beavers in the Championship. 8)
