Knuckle Curve

A’s Re-Sign Melhuse, Perez

The Oakland A’s have re-signed reserve catcher Adam Melhuse and utility infielder Antonio Perez. Both contracts are for 1 year; Melhuse’s is worth $815,000; Perez’ checks in at $500,000.

Melhuse, who batted .219/.273/.375 for the A’s in 2006, turns 35 in March. Whatever offensive skills he may have had are in pretty severe decline. He’s Doug Mirabelli without the ability to catch knuckleballs.

Perez turns 27 later this month and has played mostly second and third base in his brief major-league career. In 109 plate appearances for Oakland in 2006 he hit .102/.185/.204, which is remarkable if you think about it.
