Brandon Lyon, who had 26 saves for the Arizona Diamondbacks last season, signed a one-year deal to pitch for the Detroit Tigers in 2009. While he wasn’t guaranteed the closer role in Detroit, he will be given a chance to win that job. Lyon’s contract calls for him to earn a base of $4.25 million with performance bonuses potentially bumping it up to around $5 million. The deal makes sense for both sides. If Lyon is able to win the closer role, he could become a free agent next offseason and cash in. For the Tigers, they are getting a solid reliever for a relatively low investment. Last season, Lyon wasn’t at his best. The 29-year-old had an ERA of 4.70 and a record of 3-5 to go along with his 26 saves. In 2007, Lyon was much... [Read more]
My 68 Tigers – Al Kaline is not a battery and Willie can throw
By Guest Blogger James Edwards My age was 12. Baseball ruled. It was 1968 and the Detroit Tigers were going to win it all. Yeah, that is what needs to be told to today’s baseball fan. Hi, my name is James, sometimes known as the Squibster. Normally you would find me writing for Squibkick or NBAObsessed. You see baseball used to be my favorite sport and now football and basketball have taken baseball’s place. That needs some explaining, so we have to go back in time. Baseball in 1968 was so different from today. Nobody had computers or the internet. Most of the games were on the radio. Don’t worry, there will be no reference to the good old days, because today is the good old days. The Squibster was 12 years old and... [Read more]

By Guest Blogger, Timm Davis I hope that everyone had a wonderful turkey day, filled with food and naps. There was one team that wasn’t napping – the LA Angels. They’ve gone and signed Torii Hunter to a 5 year $90 Million contract. What does this do to the Angels? Well it improves their outfield defense, but at the same time there outfield is now a bit crowded. Look for Gary Mathews Jr (their CFer last year) to move to a corner spot so Hunter can take his customary spot in the middle of the outfield. That leaves Vlad and Garrett Anderson to share time at the other corner and at the DH spot. Maybe I’m a bit jaded but is Hunter really worth the 90MM? I mean he’s good don’t get me wrong, but I’m thinking he’s a bit over valued... [Read more]
A Bug’s Life?
By Guest Blogger, Timm Davis Once again the geniuses in the marketing department Of Major League Baseball have done it again. Now you can try and bid your hard earned cash on – you guessed it bug spray. Yes, your eye’s aren’t playing tricks on you. You can bid on the bug spray that was used when the Yankees were taking on Cleveland during the American League Playoffs. So if you were trying to find that ‘hard to find’ gift for the Yankees fan who has everything look no further. They have some other things that they’ll be auctioning – but this seems to be the ‘hot ticket item’. Yikes – I’ll have to pass on that one. In other news, Jimmy Rollins is the National League MVP – just beating out Matt Holliday of the Colorado... [Read more]

By Guest Blogger, Timm Davis Normally you would be expecting a post from Geoff, well he’s taking a bit of a break for the week. And I, TD have been asked to fill his enormous shoes for the time being. I guess you’d want to know a bit about me first, well as I’ve stated my name is TD and I blog over at rain-delay.com. You may have seen me here in the comments here and there. Anyways I’ve been pulled out of my off season hibernation, I mainly blog the Braves and the Mariners. So let’s get to it shall we. It seems that the prodigal son has returned home. On Monday, the Braves signed Pitcher Tom Glavine to a 1 year 8 million dollar deal, in what could possibly be his last season in Baseball. Honestly I’m not sure where I am on this,... [Read more]
