Blue Jays Sign Ohka

January 26, 2007 by Geoff Young

The Toronto Blue Jays have signed right-hander Tomo Ohka to a 1-year deal worth $1.5 million, plus performance bonuses. So, has anyone noticed that the free-agent frenzy has calmed down a bit? Only two months ago, Randy Wolf was getting $8 million from the Dodgers.

Wolf is better at preventing hits and winning games, but Ohka’s career ERA is lower. He also posted better numbers last year than Wolf did. Both have battled injuries over the past three seasons. When given the choice between two bad risks, I’ll take the one that costs less, but that’s just me.

I wish the Padres had signed Ohka instead of Wells.
    Cheaper, younger, about as good.

On the other hand, I’ll take Wells in place of Wolf. Of course, Wells, hopefully, is only going to be #5 pitcher and Wolf is probably not that for the Dodgers.
