Bonds Homers, Giants Lose

Barry Bonds continues his slow march toward the inevitable. He hit home run #749 on Friday night against the Yankees, who beat his Giants, 7-3.
San Francisco seems to be the only place celebrating Bonds’ achievement, and even folks there might find it hard to muster enthusiasm after watching the Giants fall to 30-42, 11 1/2 games out of first place in the National League West. Quoth manager Bruce Bochy:
I don’t think we’re thinking that much about Barry trying to reach this milestone as trying to win a ballgame. That’s our focus right now. We need to stop this and we know it.
It’s a nice sentiment, but how are the Giants going to do that? The lineup is old and injury prone, and Matt Cain can’t be expected to carry the pitching staff all season (although he and Tim Lincecum will make a wicked 1-2 combination in a couple of years, provided Brian Sabean doesn’t trade one of them for an old guy who plays good defense). Noah Lowry and Matt Morris are due for a “correction,” and Barry Zito’s contract already looks like a disaster. The wins have to come from somewhere, they don’t just magically appear.
Ah, good times in San Francisco…
