Damon as Future Hall of Famer?

This notion sort of offends me, but the folks at Batter’s Box have asked whether Johnny Damon could someday make it into the Hall of Fame. He’ll get bonus points for spending a good chunk of his career in towns that the powers-that-be deem important, but unless Damon goes on a Luis Gonzalez type late-career offensive binge, I just don’t see it.
As one of the commenters over at Batter’s Box notes, should Damon reach 3000 hits (at his age, and with his approach at the plate and durability, a distinct possibility), he will make a good test case for the idea that this magical number entitles its bearer to automatic entry to Cooperstown. Honestly, the best I can say about Damon is that he might be a better choice than someone like, say, Tino Martinez.
Yes, in fact, that is damning with faint praise.
