Dayan Viciedo, a 19-year-old Cuban baseball prospect, signed an $11 million contract with the Chicago White Sox. Viciedo had recently defected from Cuba and was living in South Florida.
Viciedo will likely play third base for the White Sox, however he also has some experience in the outfield. While in Cuba, he was a star player when he was only 16 years old while playing in the top Cuban league.
The White Sox have had a lot of success with Cubans recently, specifically with Jose Contreras and Alexei Ramirez. Ramirez was second in the American League in the Rookie of the Year voting and was especially successful in the second half of the season.
Although Viciedo could be ready to play in the majors right away, there is also talk that he may begin his American baseball career in the minor leagues.
