Derek Jeter, the superstar shortstop on the New York Yankees, has been voted the most overrated player in Major League Baseball. The vote was a poll of 495 current players.
Jeter got 10% of the vote to lead the way in the most overrated category. Although it’s difficult to rate Jeter as the most overrated player in the game, he isn’t exactly having a huge season in 2008. The 33-year-old Yankee is hitting .276 with four homers and 32 RBI.
Jeter’s batting average is lower than any season since his rookie year in 1995. Since then, he’s never batted lower than .290.
The good news for Jeter and the Yankees is that Jeter almost always plays better as the season goes along. In his career, he’s a much better hitter after the All-Star break than before the All-Star break.
Currently, the Yankees are making a run up the standings. Winners of seven straight games, New York is 40-33 and five games behind the AL East leading Boston Red Sox. In the race for the wild card, the Yankees are 3.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays.

Is Derek Jeter the most overrated player in the majors?

The same poll has him listed as #2 on the “player you would build your team around” list.
Just Sayin’
Every year people try to argue that Derek Jeter is overrated, so being that he is having an “off-year” has partial, but not all to do with this poll. And the argument why he isnt overrated which includes all his awards and accolades just gets turned around by people who believe he is overrated. So there’s no use in arguing
When will they hold a similar poll for the most jealous players in the majors? The guy’s been a stud since he came up in 96, has rings, dates supermodels and yes might be a tad over-exposed but give me a break!
Jeter is a solid shortstop and will end his career with about 3,500 hits and 4 WS rings or more possibly. No way is he overrated. We live in an age
where class acts are treated like crap by society opposed to when such a player would be treated the utmost respect back in the day.The ball players today are a bunch of primma donna’s.
What a stupid poll conducted by SI.
I didn’t know there were 485 players on the Boston Red Sox
HAHA! Nice tony! Everyone focuses on his defense being overrated, but I’m still looking for the ones calling him outstanding defensively. Overall, one of the best players to ever play baseball.
