Dice-K vs Pettitte, Snakes in a Pet Store

So, yeah, that thing I said yesterday about not putting a fork in Mike Mussina just yet? Kindly disregard it. I think allowing 10 of 19 batters to reach base pretty much kills that theory.

What are we watching today? Funny you should ask…

American League

  • Red Sox at Yankees, 4:05 p.m. PT — Again with these two teams. I have it on good authority that this is considered a big rivalry in some parts of the country. Fun pitching matchup: Andy Pettitte vs Daisuke Matsuzaka. Pettitte is 7-1 with a 2.67 ERA since the All-Star break, while Matsuzaka has a 2.99 ERA on the road. J.D. Drew hit his seventh homer of the season the other day. That puts him right there with Milwaukee’s Gabe Gross and San Diego’s Terrmel Sledge. One more home run and Drew will have as many as Seattle shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt. It’s good to have goals in life.
  • Angels at Mariners, 7:05 p.m. PT — Seattle lost round 1 of the AL West showdown on Monday. The M’s now find themselves 3 games back of Anaheim with 31 remaining. Ervin Santana and Jeff Weaver hook up in this one. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, but Santana (8.06 road ERA) actually pitched well in his last road start and Weaver (6-10, 5.51 ERA) is tied for the league lead with two shutouts!

National League

  • Mets at Phillies, 4:05 p.m. PT — New York has the upper hand in the NL East right now, but the Phillies aren’t going away without a fight. Tom Glavine starts for the visitors, while Adam Eaton — worst ERA in the big leagues among those who qualify for the title — takes the mound for Philadelphia. How does Eaton have a 9-8 record to go with the 6.36 ERA? He and Seattle’s Horacio Ramirez (8-4, 6.67 ERA) must have made a pact with some very powerful entity.
  • Brewers at Cubs, 5:05 p.m. PT — Another division showdown. Don’t get too excited — it’s only the NL Central.
  • Diamondbacks at Padres, 7:05 p.m. PT — San Diego won the opener of this four-game series on Monday behind Jake Peavy’s 11-strikeout performance. Tuesday night sees the NL’s other leading Cy Young candidate, Brandon Webb, take the hill against rookie Justin Germano. Left fielder Milton Bradley is hitting .362/.455/.676 in 30 games since joining the Padres.

Time for just one? My pick is very biased: Diamondbacks and Padres. The matchup at Yankee Stadium also has a lot of potential.

Happy watching…
