Knuckle Curve

Google as Scouting Tool

February 27, 2007 by Geoff Young

Talk about a sign of the times. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Phillies’ scout Mal Fichman used the Google search engine to track down a pitcher and invite him to a tryout camp. Fichman acknowledges that he’s “not very good with computers,” but no worries:

Karen Cope, Fichman’s friend and neighbor in Boise, Idaho, Googled the name. She came up with a phone number in Englewood, Fla. Fichman called, found out the pitcher was working out in Warren, Ohio, and got a cell phone number for him.

The geeks shall inherit the earth. I wonder if Cope gets a finder’s fee?
