Jeremy Bonderman of the Detroit Tigers had a pair of procedures to correct a blood clot in his pitching shoulder. It was later determined that Bonderman would be lost for the rest of the season.
After the blood clot was detected, he underwent a first procedure that broke up the blood clot. He then had an angioplasty on Saturday.
Tigers teammate Kenny Rogers suffered from a similar condition and he was forced to miss most of the 2007 season. However, Rogers has been able to return to action in 2008 and Bonderman will hope to follow a similar path to a 2009 return.
The 25-year-old Bonderman, who has been durable throughout his career, was having a solid season. He had an ERA of 4.29 and had three wins in 12 starts.
Bonderman is perhaps best known for losing 19 games as a rookie in 2003. He has bounced back from that rough beginning to carve out a notable career for himself. In 2006 and 2007 combined, he had 25 wins and 17 losses.
The Tigers overall have had a rough season. They are at 25-36 and are ten games behind the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.
Bonderman will be replaced in the rotation by Armando Galarraga.
