Joe Martinez, a pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, suffered three fractures and a concussion after being hit by a line drive off the bat of Mike Cameron in a game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night. Although Martinez will be forced to remain in the hospital for the next few days, the Giants are confident that he will be able to make a full recovery.

The incident took place in the ninth inning with the Giants up 7-1. As the ball hit Martinez, Carmeron became visible upset. After being attended to by team doctors, Martinez was able to walk off the field.

On the season, Martinez has a 6.75 ERA in two appearances in the 2009 baseball season. The 26-year-old rookie out of Boston College was born in South Orange, New Jersey.

Initial reports indicate that Martinez could return to action in as little as a month. He is said to have already talked to a number of teammates and hasn’t reported many side effects other than a black eye and a slight headache. The three fractures are located on the right side of his face.
