[...] An article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer talks about two displaced starters for the Mariners, Ben Broussard and Jeremy Reed. Both are expected to see reduced roles in 2007, with Broussard taking a back seat to recently acquired Jose Vidro at DH and Reed yielding to Jose Guillen in the outfield. Guillen will play right field, with Ichiro Suzuki moving full time to center, Reed’s former home. [...]

[...] I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up, but the Nationals have been making some pretty shrewd moves of late. Going back to their acquisition last season of Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez, and continuing with their pickup of Chris Snelling in mid-December, Jim Bowden and company are quietly adding some nice value to that franchise. What do we know about Williams and Claussen? Well, both once were highly regarded, both have disappointed to date, and both are still relatively young. Claussen is coming off shoulder surgery and may not be ready to start the season, but with a minor-league deal, we’re not talking about a lot of risk here. [...]

Good call. Klesko would have made a lot of sense for the Mariners. He proved toward the end of last season that his bat is just fine.

For $12 million dollars, one would think that the Mariners might be able to get a better DH. Say, why not give Ryan Klesko a shot at a fraction of that price? He's healthy at last and he seems to still have his approach to every AB intact and able to drive the ball far.
