Mariners Sign Burroughs

January 5, 2007 by Geoff Young

The Seattle Mariners have signed third baseman Sean Burroughs to a minor-league contract. Burroughs, a former first-round pick of the San Diego Padres, has been a major disappointment so far, batting .280/.340/.358 over parts of five seasons.

Just 26 years old, the son of former big-league outfielder Jeff Burroughs still has a chance to turn his career around, but he’ll need to do it soon. The market for third basemen who can’t outslug Wilton Guerrero is pretty bleak these days.
