Matt Holliday, the slugging star on the Colorado Rockies, has been traded to the Oakland Athletics. According to various news reports, the trade is still being worked on but the agreement is in place.
In return for Holliday, the Rockies are said to be receiving a package that includes Greg Smith, Huston Street and Carlos Gonzalez. Greg Smith was a rookie starting pitcher in 2008, while Carlos Gonzalez was a rookie outfielder. Huston Street was the closer on opening day for the A’s.
Holliday played well in 2008, finishing with 25 homers, 86 RBIs, a batting average of .321 and an on-base percentage of .409. While it was a good season, it didn’t compare to his great season of 2007. In that year, Holliday had 36 homers, 137 RBIs, a batting average of .340 and an on-base percentage of .405.
The 28-year-old left fielder will be placed into the middle of Oakland’s lineup and will provide the team with some pop. In recent years, the A’s simply haven’t had the hitting to be a legitimate contender. This trade, the A’s are hoping, could potentially put them over the top.
