Mets Sign Glavine

The New York Mets have signed five players so far this winter. The youngest of them is Damion Easley, who turned 37 last month. The oldest is Tom Glavine (or Orlando Hernandez, depending on your beliefs about his age), who has re-signed with the Mets at 1 year, $10.5 million.

Despite his advancing age, Glavine continues to be very effective. His ERA has been better than league average in 15 of the past 16 seasons, and he’s won 10 or more games in 17 of the past 18. Glavine is a terrific athlete who remains in great shape — a tremendously consistent pitcher who needs just 10 more wins to reach 300 for his career.

The amount is a shade high for my taste, but the Mets can afford to pay it. Plus Glavine represents baseball well, and that counts for something.
