Well, it’s about time! The NBA and NFL have been televising their drafts for years; now MLB has jumped onboard and will be doing the same on June 7 and 8, 2007. From the press release:
“Major League Baseball is delighted that ESPN2 will provide live coverage of our Draft,” said Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig. “I am glad that this agreement will give fans access to see this critical function of an organization’s development. This is an idea whose time has come.”
An idea whose time has come? Uh, yeah, like maybe a decade or so ago. Way to be on the bleeding edge there.
Okay, enough of my whining. Needless to say, this baseball geek is beyond excited.

Somehow, I’m not really excited about this.
Unlike football and basketball, baseball players are less of a sure thing than a blue moon.
After all, I wouldn’t know Jake Peavy from anybody else when he was picked by the Padres from a few years back. Just don’t see the appeal of a televised baseball draft other than for the family involved. Much rather be searching around on the internet for the draftees information.
Yeah, it’s not going to be for everyone. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time, though, and I’m pretty fired up about it.
