In case you missed it, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has ruled that federal investigators can have access to the names of roughly 100 players who tested positive for steroids in 2003. Not surprisingly, the players’ union will contest the ruling.
Acknowledging that the use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs has been a black eye on the sport, I have a hard time getting behind a witch hunt. People should be held accountable for their actions, no doubt, but at what cost? Can we justify violating their civil rights in the process?
And when I say “people” and “their civil rights,” think beyond baseball players. Think about you and me. Does that change your answer?
I don’t want to get too political here, but as a citizen of the world, I’m concerned. This could be a real you-know-what-storm for baseball and have serious repercussions for the rest of us. What a way to end the year.
