Phillies Sign Eaton

In a deal that first was being reported earlier in the week, the Philadelphia Phillies have finalized a 3-year, $24.5 million contract that brings right-hander Adam Eaton back home. Eaton, originally drafted by the Phillies in 1996, owns a 4.40 ERA over a seven-year career that includes six stints on the disabled list.
The 29-year-old compiled a 5.12 ERA over 13 starts in 2006, his lone season with the Texas Rangers. For this he is rewarded with $8+ million a year. There is no truth to the rumor that Eaton has legally changed his first name to “Jackpot.”

Has anyone adequately explained that signing?
I think first we’d need to adequately explain the current free agent market. In a word: crazy.
