Pujols, Duncan, and Tigers Pitchers Fielding

It’s the seventh inning of Game 5 between the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals, and I find myself wondering three things:

  • How long will the umpires continue to tolerate Albert Pujols showing them up? His little bat flip after first base umpire Tim McClelland correctly ruled that he’d offered at a Justin Verlander pitch didn’t impress me, and I doubt it impressed McClelland either. Pujols is a great player, but it sure would be nice if he carried himself a little more professionally. He’s good enough that he doesn’t need to pull those bush league antics.
  • Has there ever been a worse defensive outfielder than Chris Duncan? He makes every fly ball an adventure.
  • Do you suppose Jim Leyland will have his pitchers work on their fielding next spring? I know the Tigers play in the American League, but they really ought to be able to defend against the sacrifice bunt.

  1. #2, don’t forget, Jeremy Giambi played LF for the A’s at one time…

  2. Geoff Young says:

Good call, Peter. He was brutal. I suppose when Todd Hundley played LF for the Mets, he probably was up there as well.
