Remembering Buck

This World Series isn’t engaging me in any sense of the word. I’ll be grateful when it’s over and we can commit ourselves to looking toward next season. Some people are moved by the spirit of the game even when their team isn’t playing. I wish I were one of them, but I’m not.

With that awkward admission out of the way, I’d like to turn your attention to a piece by Joe Posnanski on the late, great Buck O’Neil. If you haven’t read Joe’s stuff, you should do yourself a favor and start now — dude knows how to tell a story.

As for O’Neil, I only knew him from his occasional TV appearances. When he showed up in a broadcast booth, he transformed the place. Even the most self-important announcers would just shut up and listen.

Not a lot of people have that kind of power. Not a lot command (and deserve) that kind of respect…
