With Gary Sheffield having been released by the Detroit Tigers, there are a number of teams around Major League Baseball that are showing some interest. That said, a starting spot doesn’t appear to be in the cards right now for the 40-year-old slugger. The best he can do appears to be a part-time gig with more at-bats possible if he swings the bat well.
Here are Sheffield’s possible destination according to the latest rumors:
1. Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies were reportedly the first team to show interest in Sheffield. Although he’d play an limited role, the defending World Series champion Phillies offer Sheffield a great chance to win.
2. Cincinnati Reds
Although their outfield positions are set, the Reds would be able to find Sheffield a handful of at-bats a week by using him in a utility role. The question will be whether he even considers a reserve role on a young team.
3. Atlanta Braves
Bobby Cox and Sheffield seemingly got along great during Sheffield’s time in Atlanta. The Braves could use more bats and Sheffield may provide the power they are looking for.
4. Tampa Bay Rays
This is a long-shot but the Rays may want to add just a little bit more fire and veteran leadership to their team. With a return to the World Series expected, Tampa Bay could view Sheffield as having the needed juice.
