Spend It Like Beckham

I realize this is slightly out of scope, but soccer star David Beckham has signed a 5-year deal to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy. The contract reportedly is worth $250 million. That’s $50 million a year if you’re keeping score at home.
A few points worth noting:
- Los Angeles is in the United States.
- Soccer isn’t a terribly popular spectator sport in the United States.
- Baseball is the United States’ national pastime.
- The highest paid baseball player, Alex Rodriguez, makes $25.2 million a year.
I’m not passing judgment here, but the next time you think about the outrageous salaries in baseball, be sure to remember Beckham. And also remember that “Galaxy” is a horrible nickname for a sports team.
