Outfielder Rankings – Fantasy Baseball

In 2009 fantasy baseball, there are a lot of outfielders who are off to a hot start. Here’s a look at the top five outfielder in our fantasy baseball rankings:

Raul Ibanez, Philadelphia Philles
The World Series champions added Ibanez over the offseason to get another big bat in their lineup. So far, he’s been a great addition. He already has 20 runs, 19 RBIs and seven homers.

Nick Markakis, Baltimore Orioles
Markakis has been one of the hottest prospects in baseball for years and he is showing why this season. He’s hitting .379 with 25 runs, 24 RBIs and three homers. With solid bats around him in Baltimore, he should continue to produce.

Adam Jones, Baltimore Orioles
Markakis’ Orioles teammate is having a very good season. He was a sleeper heading into the season and he’s showing his potential. He has a .432 on-base percentage to go with 26 runs, 18 RBI, four homers and two stolen bases.

Torii Hunter, Los Angeles Angels
Last season’s big free agent signing, Hunter has helped keep the Angels together this season. He’s stepped into a leadership position on and off the field. Hunter has 20 runs, eight RBI and 16 runs.

Alfonso Soriano, Chicago Cubs
Although his .272 batting average isn’t spectacular, he has 22 runs, 14 RBI, seven homers and four stolen bases. As always, the sky is the limit for Soriano.

Small Sample Hero, and Control Freak Meets Flamethrower

Small Sample Hero? Control Freak? Flamethower? Sounds like a comic book convention gone horribly wrong…

Phillies at Reds, 9:35 a.m. PT — Fire up a pot of coffee and sidle on up to the Internet (really, I’d like to see that). Cole Hamels and Bronson Arroyo square off in Monday’s first game. Plus you get a chance to watch Jeff “Offensive Beast” Keppinger in action. Honestly, I always thought that guy could be useful if given the chance, but .435/.480/.826 through the first week? Man, I love small samples. They’ll show you just about anything you want to see.
Mariners at Orioles, 12:05 p.m. PT — I don’t know that this will be a good game to watch, but it could be interesting. First off, you’ve got Carlos Silva hooking up against Daniel Cabrera on the mound. Are there two more different pitchers in the game today? Bob Tewksbury and Steve Dalkowski have retired, right? The other story line, of course, is Adam Jones facing his former team. I still can’t believe Baltimore had the smarts to make that deal.
Braves at Rockies, 5:35 p.m. PT — Colorado has stumbled to a 1-5 start in ‘08. Maybe facing 42-year-old Tom Glavine in their home park will help. You know what else would help? Not hitting .209/.281/.333 as a team. You think?

Orioles Acquire Adam Jones

Everyone else is calling it the Erik Bedard trade. I thought I’d be a little different and focus on the centerpiece of the package headed to Baltimore.

The full deal sees the O’s send southpaw Bedard to Seattle in exchange for center fielder Adam Jones, left-handers George Sherrill and Tony Butler, and right-handers Chris Tillman, and Kam Mickolio. Acknowledging that Bedard is very good — though possibly somewhat overrated thanks to the crazy strikeout numbers he posted in ‘07 — this is quite the haul for Baltimore.

In fact, you could say that it’s a better package than what the Minnesota Twins got for Johan Santana. Oh wait, Rain Delay did say that. (The folks at U.S.S. Mariner ain’t real happy either.)

Sherrill is a good situational lefty, while Jones ranks among the best prospects in baseball. As for Butler and Tillman, the general sense I get is that they have higher ceilings than any of the arms the Mets sent to Minnesota.

Weird. Usually the Orioles are on the other end of this kind of trade.
